Default Orkney brown trout

Just returned from my third visit to the Orkney islands & the top of the water sport must be the best in the U.K. Despite the usual very changeable weather sport was consistently good on both Boardhouse & Harray, using the usual suspects,ie sedgehogs, bumbles & muddlers.Preferred lines were the camo intermediate & floater & the services of a good ghillie definetly helped.
Fish size and limits is a very controversial subject in Orkney & my personal preference is to take nothing under 12 inches & limit numbers to what i will use and then restrict to no more than8 fish per rod.It is quite possible to catch large numbers of takeable trout & restraint is necessary to protect these wonderful, fragile enviroments, especially Harray.I would be interest to hear of other anglers opinions & experiences

Have to agree with you trickle, I am just back this morning from a weeks fishing in Orkney. Loch Harry was our main venue with Brian Forman as our local ghillie what a guy, he took us to different drifts as the wind changed each day. I had fish up to a pound and a half lost sea trout and plenty of 11'' to 14'' trout all on a floating line with sedgehogs and muddlers all week what a treat. Like you we returned nearly all our fish only keeping 6 for the week as some of the staff at the Kirkwall Hotel asked for a fry.
He took me up to St Mary's loch for an evening session where i had my best brown for the week a cracking 2 1/2 lb.
I also had an afternoon on Boardhouse with the Orcadian Ken Kennedy who found me nice fish of 1 3/4lb.
What a great place with lovely fishing great and friendly people and i hope it won't be 30 years before i am back the next time

Default Brian Foreman

Spot on Mr Blobbie,i fished with Brian three years ago & caught my best Harray brownie @ 2lb 031/2oz..He is great company & i'll never forget our day.My brother fished in the same Scotland team as Ken Kennedy on draycote many years ago,you wouldn't want for laughs on a day with Ken.I was pleasantly suprised with boardhouse,my best was 1lb 10 oz & had several well over the pound.I'll be back next year.
Tight lines

Yes Brian is a great boatman and a great knowledge of Harry and probably most of the lochs on Orkney.
I also had a practice day at Draycote with Ken for the international there in 1993 so, my question is who is Trickie Dabbler
