Are there any good small lakes in and around that area which are worth a visit?

You won't regret coming up here for fishing. My personal favourite has to be Carsington Water which has been extremely consistent all year with top of the water sport. Only problem is it's boat only and it helps if you know where to go as it's pretty big.
Day ticket lakes worthy of mention are Press Manor and Barlow Lakes where sport is almost guaranteed and at a reasonable price - £11 full day C&R on Press and £12 for 2 fish and C&R on Barlow.

River fishing is good and the Matlock AC stretch is seriously underfished and only £40 a season. I walk the dogs along the river and see fish moving every day, all day. They are not big fish but wild or stocked by someone else.

I consider myself extremely fortunate living here as I have soem of the best trout fishing in the UK within 10 minutes of my front door.
