Thornton is a top notch venue. Never heard of any of the others.

Thornton is run by Ifor and a better Fishery Manager it would be hard to find. Sound advice, freely given and well stocked with good quality fish.

Ifor also runs Foremark. A little further from you but well worth a visit.

First tip is to try and go out with someone with a bit of experience who will give you some tips and pointers. May be worthwhile getting tuition and a day with a pro. Well worth it.
In Derbyshire there are a few good smaller stillwaters, Press Manor and Barlow lakes come to mind for beginners. I would stick to smaller waters to start with unless you go out for a guided day on Rutland or elsewhere from a boat. If the fish are high in the water the length you can cast doesn't make too much difference.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the advice so far, might try Thornton as closer than the Derbyshire lakes, could consider a tuition and guided day at some point is the concensus that it is money well spent?

Wymeswold fishery has two lakes for trout bu fished it years ago and caught nothing neither did anyone else, so wanted to scope it out . It was a very hot day mind, also about 8 miles from where I live.

Thanks again

to get the best out of thornton you must get a boat as bank fishing is quite restrictive especially for a beginner. Always found them more than willing to help, try putting in under fishing partners to see if anybody fishes thornton and is willing to share a boat,im sure there will be.

Many thanks for that advice , I am sure a boat will pay off and I'll look on the forum for potential boat shares

Default Thornton

The CFF are having a social on Thornton 17 to 19 Sept, kindly organised this year by Ifor.

Put yourself down for a day's fishing and you will get the chance to share a boat with an experienced angler. You don't have to stay over for the BBQ and beers if you don't want to. It's a not to be missed annual event.

Not only is the craic and company excellent but you could get a day's tuition for free (or a few beers afterwards).

You won't regret it.

Dont be shy..............whichever water you decide to visit give them a call be sure right at the start of the conversation to inform them your a complete beginner looking for advice / help.

Questions you need to ask:

How the fishing Rod averge of 2.0 and above indicates reasonable sport
Methods working, Fly lines & flies
Best Period of the day to fish, morning / afternoon

If your stuggling with your casting not hitting a minimum of 15 yards dont wast your money on a permit, get a lesson hit that 15 yard plus mark & then enjoy the fishing experience that much more

Fishing on most waters will be starting to pick up with this cooler spell of weather, the water temperatures will be coming down, September should be OK, you have a week or two to get that casting right(if it needs it).

Lakeside in Wymeswold; been there a couple of times and caught my limit both times, my son also. Water is coloured in the top lake, and the fish are no great size (1 or 2 lb's, but in good condition);if you're just starting out it's pretty good but a bit pricey and no C&R. Caught the lot on GRHE/crunchers/bobs bits, but was early in the spring.

edit: just as an aside - last time I went we had the lakes to ourselves (everyone else was on the carp lakes), very friendly feel and not intimidating - nice people too.

Thanks for all the kind advice, been following the catch reports at Thornton for a while and waiting for temps to drop abit as would like to catch. Thorntons has good prices and thanks to Ifor for responding I certainly will come down at some point soon.

Casting wise I can manage good presentation at a measured 20 yds limit of garden so will pop to the park today and check what I can manage, not to worried about my casting but was self taught and a lesson would be useful so might book one when I have a days fishing

regards Seth
