It depends on your individual ability as a caster, try various #5s and #6s if you can and see what suits.

I find a Barrio WF#6 does the job for me.

Am currently awaiting a WF#5 Rio Gold, I found the #6 overloads mine but works a treat on an 8'6" #5 XP.

My 9' 5wt XP was fine with a 5 , I preferred a Triangle Taper but my wife when she used it preferred a line with more of a heavy front end and used a Rio . It all depends on your casting .
Try it with friends' lines if you can before buying . I used a 6 wt on my Thomas and Thomas 5wt which is a stiffer rod than the XP . I personally would not use a 6 on the xp .

Don't know about the 9', but my 10' XP 5wt is much, much better with a 6wt wf: I tried a few 5wf lines and none loaded as good as 6wt.

I don't have that rod anymore but i loved that one with a SA MED for casting tricks and reaching for distance. For more allround fishing i liked it with the Rio Gold. For Underhand stuff cant beat the loop Opti very agressive line..

Good response.

The question's a bit like asking what sort of wife should I get ... you need to try a few first.
