Default Forceps

Hi
Whilst teaching fly fishing to a Doctor this last week he showed me his forceps which turned out to be "Single Use Mosquito Forceps". These are used by the medical fraternity at doctors surgeries for minor operations and well used in hospitals too.
The thing about them is that they are single use and cannot be used again even when sterilised. Subsequently they are thrown away or should I say disposed of at a cost of £7 to £15 at time.
Forceps Artery Mosquito Straight Single Use

The doc has promised to send me some to try out but I wondered if any members of the forum had come across them.
The reason they thrown away is some ungodly reason of hygene but as the doctor said soak them in bleach and they will be as good as new.
I certainly will be having a word with my doctor, what a waste of money.

Cheers

Steve

My wife works as a practice nurse and brought a pair of curved ones home

Forceps Halsted-Mosquito 12.5cm

The're certainly far better quality than the ones from a tackle shop. Time will tell how long they last

How very good to know. Well timed teacher! My best forceps are either in Derbyshire or Wiltshire or in Limbo...
I am going to buy me some new ones tomorrow.

I use these myself after swiping them before they got binned. The pack contained forcepts, tweesers, scissors etc but the Doc had only used the scapel so I took the rest of the pack! The scissors are great for less delicate fly work.

Single use large scissors great for the fly tying bench to cut things like tinsel without worrying about the blade.

Insulin syringes I got given by a friend I have used the needle of to apply head varnish and also used them in the past to "float" worms. Basically inflated a worm like a ballon with enough air to keep in off the river bed and out of weeds but not so much to stop sinking.

Empty medicine containers are great for all sorts of things and come in a great range of sizes.

Hi Steve,

Are the forceps you mention serated or are they flat and could therefore be used for crushing the barbs of hooks?

I'm still using a pair of forceps my dad used (for fishing) in India whilst serving with the RAMC in WWII.

What I like about this thread is not so much about what it is telling me about forceps but what it says about ex NHS black market goods....
