Default water depth indicator

I have recently started buzzer fishing where,as I've discovered , knowing the depth of water under the boat is critical to success. I would like to make a sort of tape/reel measure to help me take depth measurements and I feel sure that someone has already developed something along these lines. Can anyone please advise or help with a convenient, pocket size reel type device to do this? Or if anyone has come across or knows of such a ready-made product ot buy that would be a great help.many thanks,

Jaykay

how about a long tape measure - the sort of thing that your PE Teacher used to measure the javelin/triple jump distance with. Attach a 2oz lead to the front - Job Done.

Even comes on it's own spool - not exactly pocket size but I'm sure you could adapt the tape measure to fit on an old reel spool.

If the lake that you are fishing is not that deep but you want to know how deep it is directly under the boat just measure the anchor rope as it goes down!

Hi

What you need is a 'Depth O Plug', they are made by Reuben Heaton ltd. Cost is about £11. What you do is tie the plug on to the end of your line, you need a spinning rod and fixed spool reel for this if you intend to cast from the shore as there is a little bit of weight in the plug. Cast it to where you want to know the depth, let it sink to the bottom, then retrieve it. It will have filled with water, look at where the level of water is and read off against the scale on the plug to find out the depth in feet. Empty the plug and re-cast to the next place. You can really build up the toology of the lake or river bed using this method, take a pen and paper to sketch out the bed and record the depth at different points.

I have used this method very successfully on my local canal for fishing deadbaits. Its surprising that even on a man made structure as this that there are points with small changes in depth, in winter that extra foot for a big fish to lie in makes a big difference when presenting your bait.

I bought one of those little pressure operated depth gauges years ago and it works just fine. Reason I didn't reply earlier is that I have not seen them advertised in tackle catalogues or websites for some time.

For boat fishing, all you need to do is load 40 or so yards of backing line on to an old or cheap fly reel, and tie the gauge to the end. In practice, pull off 15-20 yards of line and just lob the gauge in the oggin (keep hold of the reel ). You'll know when you've hit the lake bed when the line no longer goes straight down, but some lies loose on the surface. Reel up, take your reading and empty the gauge.

As PA says, you can find out some surprising and worthwhile information about what lies under the surface.

Default Depth-Therm????

Seems to me that a product once termed "Depth Therm" existed. I believe that this product was manufactured in the UK. Maybe others on this board have better knowledge concerning the "Depth Therm"???? I have my anchor rope marked at 10, 15, 20, and 25 feet. If the fish are deeper than that it is too warm to be fishing for them.
