Default Loch Thom - The Great Survivor

"There can't be many trout waters that double as military targets. Thank goodness the Luftwaffe decided to skip Loch Thom."

Great article worthy of reading in the front of the latest issue "408" of Trout Fisherman for those who haven't seen it.

I might stop by there when I'm next heading North to do some fishing. I'm wondering how many more of the places we fish have fascinating WWII stories behind them like this?

There are some really good accounts on the BBC history archive....bombs dropping in the Compensation Dam as well as obstacles built to stop boat planes on loch Thom.

Apparently a lot of families from Greenock spent the Blitz nights sleeping amongst the crags on the hillsides.

Amazing this was during my father's lifetime

That whole moor is littered with WW2 crash sites, there is a Spitfire, a Wellington and Avro Anson as well as a couple of Fairy Swordfish that came down togther in bad weather.

I used to know the old boy up at Muirsheil farm and during the war he had recovered the bodies of a few of them.

It's now most famous for being the home of 'Catman', the crazy guy who thinks he's a stray cat and eats mice
