Match the hatch. Modern dries such as deer hair emergers & comparaduns will work well.Get the bodycolour right & you are half way there. If fishing into the gloamin watch out for sedge. Do not worry too much about pattern but size & sillouette more important than colour.
I have had success in the past with Flytiers CDC & ELK.

Now that takes care of some of the modern stuff.

Now for "The Real Flies"

Traditional Badger hacked flies are good fished short & upstream.
Just vary the body colours, Yellow, green red & orange & remain with a nice stiff Silver Badger as hackle. I tie them "Stewart Style" or semi palmered.

One fly to look out for though is The August Dun

Hook: 14/12
Tail: ginger hackle fibres
Body: pale ginger quill
Hackle: pale ginger behind a grey Partridge hackle

I have a wined version (Blae & Ginger) which does well during August
which has a split wing light Starling wing a ginger quill body & ginger hackle & tail.
I am told that a March Brown at a push will do but I have not tried it.
Do not get down to the "River" often now so maybe some of the present day fishers can chip in their favourites.

It was boiling with fish but never got any takes atall, From what i could see it was was a creamy, whiteish moth shaped fly they were taking. i did not have anything remotely similar in shape so i could only put on a similar coloured fly. Thanks for your help and advice Alan
