Default Bag limits for ireland

Im just looking for your opinions,Is it time to introduce bag limits on all wild brown trout fisheries in ireland like was done on the western lakes. I over heard a few anglers at the weekend boasting to 2 tourist anglers how they had caught 96 trout on worms and maggots from an area of a lake they had pre baited the night before. You just know they kept most if not all of these fish from what they were fishing.Fish stocks here are declining and we often look to the scientists for answers but maybe we should look to our shorelines at some of the guys fishing from them.

Two fish a day is enough for anybody.

You need to have this enforced...and in Ireland, it usually isn't in a lot of places.

Poaching is rife.

I agree, but at least the bag limits are being adhered to there which can only be good for the future.I have seen shore bait anglers up and down the country catching trout on worms and i think its about time an artificial lure only for trout is the way forward to complement bag limits

I'n my opinion I don't think it will make that much of a change, look at it this way, you have the angler who is total C&R and if 4 fish bag limit is introduced it's not going to affect him. You then have the angler who likes to take the odd trout for the pot and if he's having a realy good day he might take 1 or 2 extra, again this angler will be happy with the bag limit................next comes the "frigin ejit" the angler who not only kills most if not all off his trout but has no heed on a size limit as well, do you think he's going to change his ways?????

If you are looking to the fisheries staff to police the bag limit on an on going basis then yes we are in trouble, they are understaffed as it is, so it's up to the rest of us.We are on the lakes more then fishery staff and we must take people to task if they are not complying with the regulations. Out on corrib a few years back and seen a lad knock what was obviously an undersize fish, he was dapping so I pulled the engine and went over and demanded to see the fish. He said it was to deadly hooked to put back but he seemed to get the hook out quick enough, anyway I still gave him a bollacking and I got the usual F**k OFF from him for my trouble. It might make him think next time. For me the biggest treat, particularily to the western lakes are the fish been taken in the rivers. Any day of the week there are countless people on the rivers off corrib and mask taking an unseen amount of fish on worms. Not unusual for lads to take 7 or 8 fish in a session and they can be up on 5/6lb.

Was back home in Ireland at the weekend and was told of the brilliant run of fish in the local river recently. All the "boys" bagged up. This river is supposed to be closed to salmon fishing ffs...

Thats the root of the problem - they don't value the fish that they catch

The biggest problem here in Ireland is it is almost impossible to get any bylaws passed. A few years back our local club tried to get maggots banned from our local river as unscrupulous anglers were using them to slaughter seatrout. They were using size 18 hooks which the trout were swallowing down and rather than leave the hook on small trout they were cutting the fish open to get back their hook. I witnessed dozens of dead small trout in pools after these people had been there the night before.
When we as a club applied for the bylaw we were told the the coarse fishing association had to be informed of our intentions and as a matter of policy they objected to our application even though there are no coarse fish whatsoever in the river.

THE SLAUGHTER CONTINUES TO THIS DAY

The local "lads" used to cut their initials into the pike they caught and then put them back.

Its really not that far from burning witches.
