Some will disagree, but i have noticed the same problem with using water knots. The problem seeming to be that the lower tag end, lies at a very shallow angle to the leader, thus prone to wrapping round it.
Try the Double Grinner knot, a safe reliable knot, but the lower tag end is still close to the leader, so still the same problem. This knot involves 2 separate knots on the leader, that are then drawn together to lock in place.
If you take one or maybe both of the tag ends and thread it/them between the 2 parallel lengths of leader that is between the 2 knots, when the 2 knots are drawn together, the tag end/s will stand out at 90 degrees. This will help to keep the dropper from wrapping round the leader.
Here is a good link for the double grinner, just tuck one or both (for cushioning) of the tag ends through the 2 parallel sections of leader after wrapping the knots, trim off the tag you don't want:

I don,t know if this is already known, came up with it myself and it seems good so far! Can't see any serious strangulation issues, let me know if i'm wrong please, i trust this knot! Any other ideas besides using 8lb nylon?
