Default Dever springs

Hi,
I have a day at dever springs booked for September, and after blanking in June, I was looking for tips and advice on flies/techniques to use in order to prevent a repeat dissapointment.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Mike

Mike,
I have fished Deever Springs (Hampshire/Wilshire) many times while working on Salisbury Plain Defence Sites.

Some very good fish, never caught below 4lbs, but always on White lures or White/green Cats Whisker. Never caught there with dries, always lures 7 wets. Viva is always a sureity.

Never blanked there, always wishing you could take more.

Jon

Hi mate, send BrownieBasher a PM he is a bit of a master at the big fish waters.

I have had good success at Dever Springs by fishing heavily weighted nymphs and dropping them in front of sighted fish, normally let it sink down to just below them give it a big tug and then they engulf it. Caught my biggest fish last year doing exactly that, 14lb 6oz on a small olive PT.

Dan

If conditions are good for stalking, then leaded (or tungsten) bugs, nymphs, buzzers will be good for targeting individual fish. You need to get the fly down to the right depth quickly - otherwise the fish will be long gone (depth perspective in the clear water can be difficult).

I've had more success in the second lake (nearest the entrance). I understand both lakes had been fishing quite well.

A word of caution - I understand both lakes are suffering from algea bloom and surface weed making fishing very difficult indeed. This is second hand information heard from several anglers arriving at Avington over the last 10 days or so having declined to fish Dever. (I've fished Avington four times in the last two weeks). This should be a temporary problem and I'm sure the management there will give you an up to date and honest report.

Neil

Many thanks for hints and tips. I fished lechlade a couple of days ago and managed to take 1 for 6lbs. I normally fish the river Avon, but have recently been bitten by the bug, and really want a double figure rainbow and a decent brown. I'm sure il get there one day.

I have never really fished lures, always buzzers, damsels and nymphs. How do Irish lures to best effect?

If it's hot & bright, try a white chomper with an orange floss head that goes about 1/3 of the body length. Dressed on a #12 B175 is a real killer on most smaller waters.
