I have fished this bit of the River Tweed for over thirty years. I was collared just as I left the water after an afternoon's fishing earlier this season. I was taking my waders off sitting in the tailgate of my car when this wee man breathlessly came running along the path towards me.

Are you fishing? Yes just had a good afternoon, I'm off home now. Do you have a permit? Yes I have the season ticket for the water.... I showed him it. This bit is private now. Ah I didn't realise that. It wasn't private last season, or for the last thirty years as far as I can remember? That's correct, but we just bought the rights. You'll need to buy a ticket.

Mhh.. Is that both banks that are private fishing? No we just own the rights to this bank. That's alright then - I always wade over at the tail of that pool down there and fish it from the other bank.....

Tis true.

In my mis-spent youth I had many encounters with bailiffs. I even had one fire a shotgun over my head!!!
I tried to attone for my sins in later life by becoming a Crown Bailiff for a few years.
Stories about these days in the Dark Side will have to be put on hold to protect the guilty.

Well perhaps one,
One of my fathers friends was fishing a northern salmon river when he was approached by the plummy voiced laird.
He procedded to tell my dads mate that an oink like him had no place fishing on his land.
Your land? came the reply.
Yes mine my ancestors fought for this.

We getting your effing coat off came the reply!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not easy at times Billy...... My best "keep my temper" occasion was many many years ago when we were camping in Aberlour on the Spey. I had never fished the Spey at that point in my life, and wanted to just have a cast on the water for a trout, never mind a salmon on this famous river... I went into the local tackle shop and asked for a permit. "Yes sir where is it you are staying?" I'm camping at the campsite. "Ah.. in that case I can't sell you a permit," said the man looking down his nose at me. "you can only purchase a ticket to fish our river if you are staying in a local hotel or bed and breakfast."

I was flabbergasted. The only retort that I could bring to mind as I walked out was to say, "What a way to welcome visitors to the area. We in the lowlands would never treat a fellow Scot like that if they wanted a simple days fishing on the Tweed or Clyde."

I've never been back to Aberlour on Spey. I have no idea if that rule still applies?

David.

Default what licence

Last year I took a small group of lads fishing. Prior to the trip I nagged them constantly to make sure that they had their new EA Licence. On the trip, the only person who could not produce their licence for the bailiff................ME!!!!

Got a lot of comments from the lads on that one.

Kevos1, you feel such a fool, think that is the worse thing. Aenoon I believe David is correct, I remember was some time back that there was a rule in the Grantown area that you had to be resident in the area to be able to buy a permit & camping was not included as residential status.
Perhaps it was not rigidly enforced.
Another wee true story from my errant youth.
Was about 14/15 yrs I guess & we used to fish the Barrhead dams outside Glasgow.
This time we tried our luck in The Perchy a small dam among 5 others. We knew it contained loads of small Perch & the odd nice Trout rose on occasion in the evening. Using a few maggots & a small ledger weight I cast out & stuck my light spinning rod in a hole between rocks that acted as a water containment for most of it's area. I was with a few pals at the time & a shout from one of them alerted me to my rod buckling over & this what was to me a huge Trout (2lbs) was cavorting about the water. Landing it hastily & whooped for joy as it was my biggest to date.Sticking it in a plastic bag I laid it on the concrete overflow.
Who should come along?. Two Parkies not a bailiff or anything like that but employed by the Park Services. Spotting the fishes tail sticking out the bag he grabbed it & told us to beat it as it was NO Fishing. As he walked up the path away from us boys I followed pleading with him to return Quote: My Biggest Fish. I do believe I was crying, it was that important to me. Fell on deaf ears & they just laughed & said pish off. The fish had been stuck in his right hand pocket of the big long waterproof coat they wore at the time & I don't know what came over me but I snatched at it & took off like a hare with fish & bag. We ran like hell & I could hear the stones they threw hitting around us as but luckily none hit home. Must have been 1/2 a mile later down the valley & up the slope did I stop absolutely knacked but still clutching that fish.
Forty six years ago & I still remember it like it was yesterday.
