Default Advice on Fishing Buzzers

Buzzers is a thing i,ve never fished, after watching the matt hayes and ian barr dvd i,m going to give them a try. What i noticed on the ian and matt dvd it is said that static is how they should be fished and also they should be worked ? what is the best density of line to use and what length of leader also static or slow fig 8 ?
any advice welcome.

Hi Scooby

Yeah buzzers were something i never really fished only up until a few months ago, mainly because i never new how to fish them. I would prefer to strip lures rather than fish buzzers. Wasnt until i was fishing arlington one evening and there was a huge buzzer hatch and they just werent taking anything except buzzer. I found that a fairly long leader, 12ft or so was the best and i dont think it really matters about retrieve as long as you dont strip it back like crazy. I caught fish both on a figure of eight retrieve, and fishing static, giving a strip every now and then. I think giving a strip every now and then, allowing the buzzer to fall through the water, works well, at least for me it has.....

I always thought buzzer fishing was quite boring.. until i found out how effective it was at catching fish..

Hope this helps
Rich

Hi scooby, fish a floating line and try to move the buzzers slowly,if at all. Depth is more important than fly pattern.
When trout are feeding on buzzers, they need to eat hundreds of the things to make it worth their while. Im sure the trout are cruising slowly through buzzer soup! moving slightly to the left and right to engulf the nymphs. So depth is critical, the fish will not go down or up 2ft for an item so small.
Find the right depth, usually this time of year in the top 2 ft,and you will find the takes to be a steady drawing away of the line,as the trout takes your buzzer and moves on for the next one.
Best of luck its a great way to fish, more relaxing that pulling lures. You will also catch some great overwintered fish, like bars of silver.

Steve

i like to cast across the wind with a 15 ft leader n 3 buzzers, keep in touch with it and let the wind drift it round, black and olive is the first colors i would try and orange and green in colored water

Like tinsoldier says, use a long leader and cast across and slightly downwind. Don't retrieve as such, just pick up slack line as it drifts round so you keep in contact with your flies. This way your flies are drifting the same way as ny naturals out there.

Pattern wise, I go for diawl bach or cruncher on the top dropper, black buzzer on the middle dropper and a red bloodworm imitation on the point. Of course there are plenty of other colours to try, they are just my standard starting choice.

As for the best time of year, buzzers hatch all year round, even in the middle of winter. Granted, they are usually very small during the colder months but the trout will still feed on them readily. Indeed, I was fishing buzzer at Arnfield reservoir in March this year when it was so cold, my rod rings were freezing up. A bloodworm pattern took 42 rainbows including 2 doubles that day.

Give it a go, beats pulling lures anyday

Mat

Scooby,

Buzzer fishing is a wide ranging and fascinating method of catching trout. Most of the advice you have been given is sound enough, but you will need to remember that trout feed on buzzers from the bed of the lake up to the surface. Depth is indeed the key, and the deeper you need to fish, the heavier your point fly will need to be; the longer your leader will need to be, the slower your retrieve will need to be, and the more subtle the takes will be.

Persistence and practice will win in the end.
