Default Knots in mainline.

I seem to be getting a lot of knots, and I don't just mean a little knot, I mean a full blown birds nest, in my main line.

I never have anymore line off my reel than I can cast but I seem to spend more time sorting out knots than casting, and often have to cut a cast short because of a knot.

Does anyone have any advice. The line is new this season from GAC, can't remember what brand the line was.

Be grateful if anyone could suggest any changes I could make as it is becoming very frustrating!!

Many thanks,

Matt

Hi Jim,

Can't remember exactly what I paid, but fairly certain it wasn't a huge amount as was on a budget at the time.

Is that likely to be the problem?

Thanks for your quick reply,

Matt

Sounds like it could be twisting on it's self. Had this problem on a new SA 5wt line that came on my reel. To sort the problem I atached the line via a smal bit of mono to a swiel and then tied that to a fence. Pulled out the whole length of line added tension and let it spin. After a short while the spinning stopped then I reeled it all back up and now it's fine.

All thanks to previous advice from Pitsford Pirate.

You can try the swivel trick, but if that fails.I recommend you get a line from The pirate. You will not have any more memory problems.

Is this your first fly line?

A beginner, learning how to cast efficiently, will make some horrendous fankles - I surely did.

It may knot be the line's fault.

You also have to be carefull in spooling your flyline onto the reel.you must not let the line spill over the edge of the spool lying on the floor as this will impart permanent memory into your line.

Spot on Jim!

Spooling a line is best achieved with a patient partner who's prepared to hold the spooled line with a pencil through the middle of the spool.

If you don't have a patient partner, or you are in that state of grace without a partner, drop the spooled line in a bucket of water and then reel it onto your fly reel.

Default Take the line for a walk

If you are experiencing twisting line, go to your local park or fishery. Pull the line off the reel as you walk. Once all the fly line is off, walk it out for around 20 metres or so, this should allow the line to untwist.

I do this every so often and it works too. They say reason is having too much line off the reel during casting, which induces twist.

Hope this helps.
