I want to go beyond rubbing mud along my mono-filiment - growth one might call it - can you suggest some good line degreaser to hide my leader from watchful trout?

Orvis Mud is about the best of the proprietary brands but why not mix your own- Fullers Earth mixed with washing up liquid and a bit of glycerine to stop it drying out- keep it in an old film canister. If you search the forum there will be umpteen recipies for exact mixes.

I'll check out Orvis Mud, I don't know about making my own - knowing my luck I'd accidentally make nitro-glycerine

muds as good as anything, and its free only fools but the stuff on the shelfs

Call me a fool but I use Lureflash Sinkit. £1.90 from Yorkshire game angling with free delivery. Does the job, removes the shine of the mono and has a consistent texture unlike bankside mud. Because it comes in a handy container I don't have to move much if I change my cast in the middle of the river

Have tried Xink and although it worked it has a really bad habit of re-enacting a certain oil companies gulf of mexico disaster. It also doesn't remove shine from the line.

Only use that on my klink hammers now to rectify an over exuberant application of floatant. Won't replace it when it runs out.

imho fullers and fairy make the best one, The ones you buy don,t have any detergent in them to remove oils from the tippet left of you,re fingers etc.

When I started fishing last year I bought a tub sinkant made the people who do mucilin but I found that when I added fairy to it to make it into a paste after it dried out it worked better than the original stuff.

If see an oil using floatant get a tub of of dry fly silicone mucilin in the glass bottle and put a size sedge-hog in it and drop in the water works best a night and shine your headlamp on it, I changed fly 3 times thinking it was something I had used to tie the flies before someone beside me started laughing and told me it was the floatant.

OK. My turn to display ignorance again. I get why you are using mud on mono. do you also use it on Fluorocarbons ?
I did a quick search on Orvis.com and Mud only displayed rugs and boots. Orvis.co.uk showed me a lil red tub. I guess orvis mud is not popular in the states. we do use expensive hand sifted mud for baseballs...
Googling Fullers Earth shows me makeup related stuff, is that the same as you guys use?

Yep, that's the stuff - you can find it advertised on ebay in 100g bags & they also try to palm it off as "line degreaser". Though, I'm not sure of the glycerine - seems to be liquid & for medical purposes. I might mix my own in the future - as for the present - gimmie some pre-made manufacured stuff. I don't want fish blowing fairy bubbles!

Glycerine acts as a humectant, humectants are hygroscopic, they will draw moisture to them and have the ability to form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, in the case of glycerol (glycerine) it is due to the presence of three hydroxyl (OH) groups. The hygroscopic nature of glycerol means that its addition to fullers earth/washing up liquid degreasers should help prevent the mixture drying out.
