Default kit for a beginner

Took a work colleague fly fishing for the first time a couple of weeks ago, due to a bit of success on the day he now wants to go again and is looking at purchasing a basic kit, ie rod, reel & line combo, not to worried about the other bits and pieces as I will help out with that.

Looking for a 9'6" or 10" 6/7wt kit in the £70 - £100 range, suitable for reservoir boat and bank fishing, preferably supplied with two lines or at least a reel with a spare spool

With so many suppliers and kits out there I'm finding it difficult to recommend, any suggestions welcome.

Garry Evans does combo outfits, this one has 3 lines but they start from £70

Scierra Matuka Stillwater Outfits

Or try Grommit on here (Ian Woods)

If I was asked to make up a package for £70-100 I would try to persuade them to stretch to about £130. All too often people by a shonky rod and then have to shell out a year later for a completely new set up.

I would start them off with a decent but affordable floater (see Pitsford Pirate), a bargain basement reel and then really stretch or decent rod. Just had a quick look at the Glasgow Angling Centre clearance pages and you could get an Orvis 9.6ft 7 weight for £90….would do for many years

A nice reel is a joy but, unless salmon fishing, most of us could get by with any old guff without seriously affecting our fishing.

Lines etc can be added to piecemeal but its better getting the rod purchase right.

Hi

I bought my son a #5 Scierra Matuka from Garry Evans last year as his first fly rod and it came with reel, spools, floater and inter with some flies and a flywallet included for around 120 nicker and it has been fabulous for him.
Looks great too!

Cheers

Many thanks, the Gary Evans Scierra deal looks like a nice simple option, will pass on the info.

Agree with that 100%
Get best rod your budget will allow, and reasonable line. For most begginers, and indeed the bulk of trout anglers, the reel only holds the line. Most trout anglers never, ever, see the backing, but buy reels for the cosmetic value.(but there is the odd one who do see it)
Just done simillar for one of my teenage sons, bought him a good 10' rod, but reel is old rimfly! Granted it is as new, but will be more than good enough until he progresses to tackle tart stage!!
Weigh that advice up with the fact that I use Sage rplxi rods and Tibor reels, for most of my sea trout salmon and saltwater fishing!
My boy aint at thatstage yet, he just wants to go rainbow fishing with his mates, without the burden of using the old mans gear!
And Jeez am I pleased he aint borrowing it any more!
regards
bert

John Norris are selling off Shakespeare Trion Rods for £36.99

Shakespeare Special Offer Trion Fly Rods

As previously said, get a cheap reel and lines from the pirate.

Hope this helps
