Default Kelly Kettle warning

Was just watching the greater rod race, where Matt and Brownie were in Ireland on Lough Sheelin.
Having stopped for a brew up and bite to eat, that muppet Brownie was fuelling the Kelly but had the cork in it, a big NO NO.
Its written on them not to boil them with the cork in!!! reason? The steam makes the cork swell, thus causing an air tight seal that builds pressure!!
Result--- Bang@@ at best just the cork flies out with boiling water and steam spilling everywhere!!!! At worst very serious burns and split Kelly.
The lads down at Conn dont put the warning there just for the sake of it, and if used as they should! no angler should be without them, My workmen have nicked one of mine to use on the farms when we are erecting sheds, they say it beats a flask hands down for a good hot cup of tea, soup, coffee or Oxo, I reckon they just want a bit longer crib break.
Happy fishing
Mike

Sadly I think its one of those mistake everyone makes once

Unusually swapped my kelly for a flask when boat fishing on monday....missed the ritual of firing up a brew but, to make matters worse, I ended up pouring away the foul luke warm tea that had the unmistakeable aftertaste of washing up liquid.

Never again!

With you on that one, until I discovered the wonder of Bicarbonate of Soda. Removes the smell and taste of washing up liquid....but can sometimes leave an unsightly tide mark if not rinsed thoroughly.

If I do use a flask I clean it with babies sterilising tabs or fluid (milton)
Clean as a pin.
But the Kelly is the real deal on pleasure fishing days,
PS, Anyone use the fry up kit that you can get for the Kelly?? If so whats the verdict on it?

Couple of hints if you don't want to go the Kelly Kettle route;
  • Use an all stainless steel vacuum flask not a glass liner one. They are far more robust, and retain the heat in the water much better;
  • Take the tea bags and milk separately and make a cup from scratch when you want one

Shamus...stroke of genius with the Bicarbonate of Soda...will try.

As for the grilling kit I was on a fishing holiday with a guy who made his own folding grill plate out of old oven grills, a pair of pliers and a couple of split rings (to make the hinges).

I was very envious when his cheese and ham sandwiches were toasted over the embers of the kelly kettle.

Find a bit of a dishwater tablet best for cleaning flask, probably safer than bicarb. Just leave it to soak for an hour and so.

Thanks for posting the warning Mike. We have put a second warning heat resistant vinyl label on the kettles in recent years to emphasise the point and we will be putting a laser imprinted warning on the kettles in the next couple of months which should last forever.

I would just like to take the opportunity to warn people NOT NOT NOT NOT to put any item over the spout when the kettles are in use, stoppers, whistles etc. as the water can boil very vigorously. We have experimented ourselves with different whistles and stoppers etc. and absolutely none work safely so the only suggestion is to follow the instructions as provided.

Further safety information is available on our web site.

Tight lines to all.

JB
