Default Leader strength help for beginner

I am still relatively new to setting up fly gear, Can you tell me what strength leader i would need for reservoir and large stillwater, Fish are around 2-6lb and i'm using a 6w rod with matching fly line. Hope this makes sense?
Matt

6lb should cover you for these occasions you mention but remember respect the fish and dont try to drag them in.

I would use a minimum of 6lb line for that sort of fishing. Reservoir fish can give you a good run for their money.

If you might connect with fish up to 6lb on a large still water then I would go for 8lb, especially as you are just starting out.
There won't be a significant difference in the actions of your flies (unless you are going very small) and you will give yourself that little bit of extra margin that could be the difference between getting a fish on the bank or making that small mistake and losing it.
Good luck!

Try 6lb Maxima Ultragreen, it would tow a barge. Don't go for the fancy
fluoros, copolymers and "double-strength" lines.

Above advice is sound. Especially andrew w's point just starting out 8lb. As pointed out also above they can give a good account of themselves and if they take you by suprise the extra buffer may be handy.
Personally I agree with taff, a good quality 6lb should deal with things ok.

Looks like it's going to be a good day, I've began by agreeing with everyone

For reservoirs I'd go for a minimum of 8lb to start off with. Remember that most of the competition guys are using 12lb for pulling lures and 10lb for nymphing and they hook just as many fish but are more certain of landing them. There's plenty of time for trying finer leaders when you've got a bit more experience.

The leader you use is dependent on the fly you are using, presentation is everything
