Welcome to the forum.Fish the dry fly,or use an intermidiate line to stop surface disturbance.

Try a size 20 Griffiths Gnat, fished on a long leader with a 0.1mm Stroft tippet. Cast out and wait for takes.

Some while ago I fished Blithfield, from a boat, in just such conditions.

Nothng doing so I thought I'd take a rest and threw out a Washing Line so I didn't have the fag of recasting.

It just lay there doing nothing until I moved my feet and knocked the rod which had the effect of twitching the flies. All Hell broke loose and I wondered, for a second, what the devil was going on.

The water absolutely boiled and result was three fish on three flies, only one of which stuck. The two droppers bust!

Some good advice here.
If there fish rising then it is a good idea to look for the rises and don't keep casting the water unnecessarily.
If there are no fish showing then the use of a very slow intermediate (if you think they are still in the upper layers) or consider a faster sinker, as they could have gone deeper, epsecially if the weather/water is warmer.

What about casting out and stripping line like a madman if all else fails?

a sinking lines good to have in a flat calm but its not nesessary just slow up your retrieve so you minimise disturbance make sure you get your leader to sink thats what i consider to be most important floating leaders can put any wary trout off.

bah! a flat calm gives you the advantage, fish are attracted to the surface cos they can see the food and you get to see where they are so you can cast straight to them, not sure if you could make it easier, maybe have someone cast for you

not letting them know your there is the tricky bit.

edit, i thought of something usefull to say..more fish are spooked by lifting the line off the water than casting out, which ironically can bring fish from 20' away for a curious look, a rip off the water can empty a 40' radius immediately leaving you looking at rises just out of casting range.
