Default Anglers beware!!!

It's probably common knowlege but I didnt know about it so I posted with a title that most folk might read.
I was out seatrouting this week and while wading heard / saw a little "thing" struggling in the current. Eventually I rescued the little blighter to find it was a tiny sodden wet through bat. As I was drying the little fella before release he gave me a friendly little nip before scurrying away none the worse for wear. I told a friend the following day who told me to GET TO THE DOCTORS IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I MIGHT HAVE RABIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I called NHS direct who initially told me not to worry, no need for any measures at all. The nurse called me back a while later to tell me to get to the local casualty unit.
Big do's and little do's, I was in hospital from around 11.00 to 16.30 with health care profesionals using google to aid their investigation
I was told that If I wanted the vaccination immediately I would have to pay for a courier to pick it up at £100+ or I could wait 2 days and have it done by my GP!!!!!!!!!
Great service hey.
Being strapped for cash I opted to wait and on Friday had the first course of injections of vaccination and immunoglobulin, totalling 11.2cc's. One in each leg and one in my left arm (didnt want it effecting my right handed casting).
They all hurt like hell, made me feel sick and I have the pleasure of this again tomorrow, then on Friday, the following Friday and the following Thursday.

On the plus side I'm immune to rabies for the rest of my life.

Rob

I didnt think rabies was in the UK and how wrong I was.

I've been pointing out this threat for a while, getting little in the way of thanks.

I think they would be happier to see a few people die and nurture the lovely critters.

Kids are brainwashed into thinking these vile creatures are cool.

Your medical service sounds woeful, they had probably never heard of it, and of course all Europe is rabies free

I asked a French friend how many French dogs got the annual rabies job - she reckoned around 60%.

My money is that you'll live. Daubentons are the rabid ones and I think it is 1 in a 1000 may be active with it.

Bad luck, Roders, at being thanked in such a way for your kindness. I hope we would all have done the same (saved the beast, not bitten you), but, having been bitten, at one time or another by pretty well every species of british mammal from badgers down, I have (it took time!) learnt to treat all animals with circumspection. I almost always fish with a glove on one hand, which helps, and try to actually handle animals as little as possible. You're right about the rabies jabs; a jolly good reason for avoiding bites!

It would have been easier to have just drowned the Bat, they only nick the flies from the trout anyway.
Hope your OK.
