Default Float or fly

Just come back from a months holiday in southern Canada ( Detroit River)
Didn't do any fishing-just laid round the swimming pool getting hot and now
and again getting cooler.
USA/Canada is a great place to get fat.
Anyway my question is-- Watched the fly fishing program on the box
and noticed that nearly all of their nymph fishing is done using indicators.
You may as well say they were float fishing.
I could not see the reason for having a fly line- mono all the way through
with a fixed spool reel or centre pin would have done the job.
On rivers over here I see people using a large fly as an indicator but they
still expect that they may get a take on it.--- Thats still fly fishing aint it?
But using a indicator/float?
If I went down to my local river( which is fly fishing only) and used
float tactics as in coarse fishing but with flies ------ is that fly fishing?
Still got jet lag-so if this is a stupid question-- thats my excuse.

To answer your question quickly yes using a indicator is still fly fishing as you have a fly under it not bait.

this is a question that may or not raise a few eyebrows...now I'm from out west, but before the great move, I was also living in Southern Canada...but back then if you were a fisher, U would use, fly rod, reel, line and flies..and if you were experimental as I was, one would use a long rod..12-14', float or centre pin reel, with mono, and either bait or flies...

..out here the method of centre pin bypassed the prairie provinces, and landed in BC., the reason being the waters are bigger [wider] in BC..so if you see a fisher here in Alberta, he either comes from BC., or from out east..now the fishers in say Alberta who are fly fishers, are a bit of what are called snobs, die heart to the core, and so indicators were put in play with nymphs...but wait a darn minute...wasn't that method started in Czech Nymphing first?..in Eastern Europe.....??

..so what ever method you prefer, providing a fly is your lure, then I'd have to say....."yep..all good that catches the fish"............AW

Another thing I noticed, which I have not seen here, is the use of split shot
to get the flies down quickly.
Yes- it must be fly fishing if you are using flies.
So now that bait is not allowed on my local river.
When the grayling season starts and the conditions are right- out will come
my float, shot and trotting rod and I will give it a go.

Fishing with a float is just fishing it isn't fly-fishing. The challenge fly-fishing presents is too great for some people so they feel the need to cheat a little.

I do not use indicators but I certainly do not think "it is cheating". Is the coloured braid, knot or indeed just the movement of your fly line not an indicator?
It is just another method. Way I look at things if you do not like doing it or the method then don't. As long as you get enjoyment & treat your quarry with some respect then that is fine by me. As a dedicated trad wet fly man, many times I have fished waters & even I have realized that a different method would have been better to catch fish but I persevere with what I know. Why because that is what I do.
I have served my time read the book seen the film & got the T shirt. I now fish for the shear enjoyment. Catching fish is of secondary importance, just part of the whole picture.

One of my mates loves fishing dry fly on our reservoir. He'll often throw in bread, pellets and even strip fish of eggs and use them to attract fish into his swim - but he's still fly-fishing - isn't he?

Fly fishing is banned on the Derwent in the park at Matlock Bath but one or two get around this by trotting shrimp immitations under a stick float for the grayling.

Doesn't matter what's under it... it's still a float.
