Default fishing in an algea bloom

Afternoon Gents

Am meant to be be taking my 11 year old nephew fishing for the first time on Sunday and where we are going apparrently has the start of an algea bloom. Now if it was just me I would go somewhere else, but realisticially it is the only place to take him due to geography and time constrictions.

Any idea of the best way to fish these conditions or would I be better taking him another time?

As usual, all advice much appreciated

All the best

if the water is a decent size the wind will very often move the bloom to the downwind bank so this is worth avoiding and if a divide can be detected fish will often patrol the edge and this can help if you can pull flies out of the bloom into clear water. if the bloom is all over then your only option is to use as many flies as you can cope with and have some of them at least that cause disturbance in the water so that the fish can sense your fies before they see them. also try a slow period in your retrieves to allow fish to take as i believe that trout tend to go more slugish with a loss of oxegen when in algea cheers john

As the nephew would never forgive you for not going, get out there sunday!.
A lot of the popular lures of to-day will fish well in a bloom. orange or yellow/pink blobs, cats whiskers, or simillar chenille/fritz bodied lures in bright colours will catch rainbows in algal blooms.
Remember that bloom is generally only in first few feet of water, as is living plankton looking for light to multiply!
when it dies it sinks to bottom thus causing oxygen problems, so try to fish the deeper sections around edges of bloom if poss.
most of all keep the nephew engrossed, move around a bit till you nail one, and he will be delighted!! enjoy!

Thanks for the info chaps, no doubt I could have put it into practice if the gates to the fishery were not locked when we got there at 8am and were still like it at 9.15 when we left! No doubt a reasonable explanation, but try telling that to an 11 year old, so had a 50 mile round trip to another venue and despite plenty on view (and no algea bloom), the trout were having nothing any one could put in front of them. Still he wants to go again, but says can he hae a proper rod this time, heeky little sod!!

All the best
