Anyone shore fished in Gumbit Turkey, or around that area.
Thanks Alan.

Hi,
Yes I shore fished at Gumbet when I lived there. The locals tend to use tiny bits of chicken as bait ledgered on the bottom although bristle worms can be a problem. They also use floating bread with a lot of tiny hooks.
The fish that they catch are a small sea bream type of fish although if you go just round the coast and fish from Bitez beach then you can pick up sea bass.
If you go round the jettys in both places or, go to Bodrum, then grey mullet are also present, although I wouldn't eat the mullet from Bodrum harbour as it is rumoured that some of the gulets have been known to discharge their sewage tanks there.
In Gumbet but mainly in Bitez you are also extremely likely to catch octopus which are highly prized by the locals and last year I saw a gentleman catch one on Gumbet beach just in front of the Siesta hotel.
Hope that this helps.

I'm off to Akyaka in Turkey in October. I've was there a few years back and there seemed to be a lot of trout about in the restaurants and the hotel had ornimental pools full of little brownies.

There's a clear, very cold river which has some lovely big fish in it. I think they might have been chub.

I'm wondering if the trout I saw were also in the river somewhere? Anyone know?

Cheers

Andy

No, not trying to wind him up, if memory serves me right they are called "Levrek" in Turkish and are very sought after

I have fished at Kalkan a few times.
Water temperature can be the main problem. During hot periods all of the larger fish go to deeper water well off shore.
Best method I found was to mash a tin of tuna with bread and throw it in as ground bait little and often.
I then fished with small bread flies made from dubbed white CDC on the top dropper and dubbed white rabbit fur on the point.

I've been to Akyaka a fair number of times the last few years.
There's some big mullet in the river. You can see them from the bridge in the deeper water.
This may have been the fish you saw.
Caught a few smaller ones around the harbour with bread and size 18 hooks but the big fellas are way too wily.
Not sure if there's any trout in the river but there were some in the smaller stream at the other end of the beach at one time.
The people from the hotel next to it put them in but I think they're gone now.
