Default 4wt rods ?

Hi

am after a bit of advice about a four wt rod what advantage does a 8ft have over a 9ft and vice versa?

I am lookingh for a rod for the likes of a small still waters for trout like chalk springs. I currently have a 7wt x flite but this i feel is a bit over gunned for this type of fishing.

Cheers
Tony

8' feels dinky and easy to control, great fun at short range but if your used to a longer rod the lack of the extra leaverage can get frustrating on longer casts,
there are some powerhouse 8 footers though, a hardy angel 4 weight will outcast many heavier rods for example.

If you went with the shorter rod, you would have some trouble casting across the lakes at Chalk Springs surely?

Would also be fun if you hooked in a big fish on a 4wt!!!!

you can spit across most of the spots at chalk springs, your 8 ft choice is fine. jon.

Go for the 8 foot option. A great deal of my stillwater fishing, particurlarly dry and buzzer fishing, is done with an 8ft #4 rod. You can cast as far as you need, it just takes a bit of practice! I've had a 15lber on that set up with a 4lb leader, plus plenty of fish in the 5 to 8lb range - it's certainly an experience you won't forget in a hurry!

so basically the 9ft version gives you that extra bit of power for a slightly longer cast?

is there any other main advantages/disadvantages other than casting as i will be mainly using this at small trout waters and the extra distance could come in handy for bigger waters.

What do you all think of the greys x flite in 4 wt they seem to be reasonably priced.

Cheers

I went bang smack in the middle with the streamflex 8'6'' 4# and am very happy with it. Lovely action and has done very well from tiny grayling on chalkstreams up to a 12lber from Avington in May this year.

Definitely recommend one to anyone.

Daft question but would a grxi 7/8 wt reel fit onto the rod or would i need to buy a smaller type reel?

Too big - it will be out of balance. Treat yourself to a smaller, more suitable reel. But FWIW, I'd stay clear of the Streamflex reel
