Default First Time Fishing Larger Waters

Hi Chaps,

I apologise in advance if the content of this thread is repetitive or obvious.

This weekend, I would like to fish a large water such as Rutland as opposed to my local smaller trout fisheries.

I have never fished a large water such as this and I wondered if any of the experienced anglers out there could give me some pointers on the things to consider when tackling a large water from the boat i.e dangers, boat etiquette etc….

Perhaps it's advisable to fish such a water with another angler for the first time?

Any advice is really appreciated!

Best,

Delboy

1st of i,m not what you could call a highly experianced angler. however when you go to such places you will notice where the pods of boats are. place yourself so that you can drift past where the other boats have fished. providing there is some sort of wave, then everyone drifts along and you will get a shot in the hot spots. Also speek to the owners they should give you a few pointers. Hope this helps good luck Alan

Subject to what the experienced and knowledgeable locals might say otherwise, this is perhaps not the optimal time to be taking your first steps on a big reservoir. Fishing can be tricky and inconsistent if the weather is bright, hot and brassy in the second half of summer - like now.

Either September / October, or leaving it till next spring, might be a better bet.

Get hold of a copy of Anglian Water's publication "Hooked" and see if there are part day courses for reservoir newbies being run soon on any of the lakes.

I used to competition fish Rutland, if you can, get someone experienced to go with you, to show you how things are done. It will be invaluable to you in my opinion.

Also someone with knowledge of the lake and where is best to fish would be a bonus, a boat seat in the boats at Rutland is an advantage, oh and a drogue if its windy.

If you want to know anything specific just send me a PM,

Willy...........

Thanks for the pointers chaps!

I'll try and get out with someone experienced so I can get to grips with the larger waters!

Cheers.

First off Anglian Water have an on-line video of the boat handling basics:

Anglian Water | Home | Leisure | What to do | Fishing | Trout and coarse fishing | Safe start video

Secondly Rutland Water is quite bigso you could struggle. It aint easy at the moment but if you do go out the top of the North Arm still has some quality fish in it. Get in close to the new weed beds and fish dries. Alternatively if you're struggling the boils are on in the main basin, so haul a lure through one of them as they're alive with fish.

Full set of AW's rules here:

http://www.anglianwater.co.uk/_asset...hing-rules.pdf

Thwart boards supplied by Rutland Water Fly Fishers are available for 50p a day, so no need to splash out on a boat seat. A drogue will be useful though.

There is a chance I'll be out on Saturday, so if you're looking to get out then I could be up for a half day boat? Drop me a line if you fancy.

Have Fun,

Matt.
