Most Flouro is stiff. The X rating is a measure of the dia in inches.Rather than breaking strain.

Have a read of this.
Quote:
When you are fishing small flies on flat water for trout or panfish the leader tip must be relatively thin for soft presentation of the fly, and to allow drag-free drifts, so get leaders tapered down to 4X or 5X. If you are casting a weighted Woolly ****** in the riffles you need a shorter (7½' or less) stouter leader that can turn over a large fly and stand up to the pressure of striking an unseen charging fish. The general rules are The smaller the fly, the smaller the leader diameter (tippet end). The larger the fly, the larger the leader diameter. Also, smaller flies, flat water, and spookier fish require longer and thinner leaders. Some spring-creek trout are so finicky that you may have to go as light as 7X or even 8X

The "x" system has merits in that it does away with problems in trying to match breaking strains and different types of material. You know by looking at the x -rating whether one material is thinner or thicker than another.

Also a good rule of thumb is to match any particular size of fly to a tippet diameter by using the x - rating system. Roughly to divide the fly size by 3 to get the correct tippet diameter, so for example size 12 flies are best fished on a 4x tippet.

If you are worried about the breaking strain just check the spool for the tippet before proceeding.

The Amercians use the system extensively and it makes a lot of sense.

Try and hold the curly length between your hands and rub firmly but not fast over your trouser leg - this often removes the curls or kinks.

I use Riverge - costly but very good.

Use the Uni-knot for good knotting strength. 3 turns on very heavy line or 4 on most lines you would use for trout.

Looking at this and other posts on the subject of tippet materials, everybody seems to have their own favourite and there is little consensus on which is "best" (ignoring the argument over whether fc is worth the premium price). The X ratings are useful, but if the breaking strain for a given X rating varies widely then presumably one would be well advised to opt for the stronger one? That then forces me to come to the point at last, which is this - can we rely on the manufacturers claimed diameter and breaking strain of tippet? Is anyone aware of any scientific or otherwise objective comparisons of different brands which test the given diameter, strength and stiffness, for both mono and fluorocarbon?

The office of fair trading was looking into this as a case of misselling and it is still under review.
