Thanks stevoboxer - that will be my plan B if the other tricks fail. I knew that there were some good rod builders on here - in fact, I believe that I have an old rod tucked away called a 'supernymph' that was made by Steve Parton, who has also offered some advice on here...

Just a bit of an update / some feedback. I tried the WD40 last night - no joy. I tried the vinegar and water mix, followed by rinsing in the soapy water - several times - but no joy (nice and clean now though ). I think it is well and truly ****'d. I will try and get some paraffin and give that a bash next...
