Default Dry fly presentation

Hi

I'm new to the forum and forums in general. I've fished for many years but only begun fly fishing seriously relatively recently. I mostly fish the Reservoirs and rivers on Dartmoor. I have read this forum without registering many times and I thought I would take the plunge and join in properly. Not completely sure how to use the forum but I'd like to ask a question. One thing that I cannot get right is presentation of a dry fly. I can never get the tippet to sink no matter how often I degrease the line. I have tried various different lines including Frog Hair, Wychwood sub-surface and Drennan double strength all see to sink immediately after using fullers earth but soon start floating again. Can anyone help with this as I am sure fish can see the tippet and that reduces takes?

Just use 0.1 stroft and forget about degreasing. The fish don't seen to mind.

Welcome to the Forum.
As stated if you use a fine enough tippet it does not seem to matter, along with regular degreasing and you should fool a few fish.

i allways use flurocarbon and pull this about a yard or so to take the line under,or tie on a small dropper washing line style with a buzzer or a nymph hanging down.

a slightly different way of looking at it is not letting them see the tippet, on still water, if you cast progressively out half a leader length at a time the fish should technically be on the other side of the fly away from the leader,

on running water an aerial mend, curving the leader round or casting at an angle upstream does the same to a degree, so the fish sees the fly first before the tippet,

tricky but it gives you confidence that they are not being put off. also worth mentioning that a very light tippet might just not be heavy enough
to break the surface.

welcome to the forum mate. you could try adding a tiny split shot above your fly.

as is stated above you need to keep applying the degreasnt every few casts reason being that if your useing a floatant on your fly it tends to work its way up the leader making the whole damn thing float, saying that i have a prefferance of greasing the leader up to about a foot before the fly so the leader doesnt pullthe fly under,

By greasing do you mean applying mud?
