Default Fishing near Tryfan?

Are there any streams, rivers, small lakes near Tryfan that its worth trying for trout, grayling, salmon etc? Also, do you know if its possible to get permits for fishing in these parts of Wales on a Sunday?

I saw a programme I think it was on BBC2 a week ago on Wales and it was the River Wye and Martyeg(sp?) just across the border near Shrewsbury? Looked like a fantastic location I plan on heading down there some other time.

I'm going to be in Snowdonia area though this weekend near Tryfan and thought I may also go fishing to besides climbing so if you know of any good places you'd recommend worthy of a cast please let us know.

Llyn Idwal holds trout. It's located in the cwm below Twll Du, so if you do the Tryfan - Bristly Ridge - Glyder traverse, take your rod and have a go. I have a feeling you might need a permit though - possibly Ogwen AA? Best to check first....

You can get a day ticket for the Bala AC water on the Welsh Dee from the sports shop in Bala, it has salmon, sewin, brown trout and grayling.

No problems with Sunday fishing. Depending if you are staying on the Llanberis or Ogwen side (it's a long circumnavigation) I would seek permits on either Seiont Gwyrfai & Llyfni Angling Society (for the Llanberis side) or Ogwen (A5 side). Good water levels should hold thru this weekend. I'm afraid you will have to make do with salmon and trout as there are no grayling in those river systems.

Default Trout near Tryfan?

I'm told there may be trout in Llyn Blochwyd (spelling?) at the foot of Tryfan, as well as Idwal. Has anyone fished there recently and got any advice, please?

Welcome to the Forum uglystick.

Spelling was almost right; Bochlwyd tranlates to 'grey cheek'. TroutAtlas has a great map, also showing Idwal to the west with Ogwen to the north, on the A5 Nant Ffrancon Pass road: Llyn Bochlwyd, Conwy

I've never been to Bochlwyd as I prefer the walk - not quite a climb - up to Idwal. I haven't been this year.
The club CGDO OVAA membership hold 4 mountain lakes. Ffynon-y-Lloer (well of the stars) best early season.

"The waters available for fishing are the four lakes - Ogwen, Bochlwyd, Idwal and Ffynnon Lloer and those parts of the river Ogwen that lie between Pont y Pandy, Halfway Bridge and Pontwr and from Pont Ceunant, Ty'n y Maes to Ogwen Lake including all the tributaries that fall into these parts of the river".

Sorry for the spelling - I should have checked it - but thanks for the advice.

I thought I'd read somewhere that Idwal's water was very (too?) rich in old mining minerals (or something like that) which was adversely affecting the fishing, but as you say, it'll be an easier walk to check it out. This'll be my first 'fishing trip' and I'm expecting the fish to be a lot harder to catch than the stocked lakes I'm used to.

If you've any fishing tips specific to these lake, let me have 'em, please.

If anyone's interested, I got up to Blochlwyd in April 2011 and had myself some great fun with some small, but definately wild brownies. The wind was a bit tricky at time - tends to swirl around - but a tiny GRHE did the trick.
I tried Idwal the next day and didn't see a living thing, in the water, or on it. I'm not sure about Idwal, but I'd definately give Blochlwyd another go & it was good exercise for me too!

Default Re: Fishing near Tryfan?

The last time I was in the region was at the back end of three seasons ago. I was on public transport and shanks's pony and I planned to roughly halve the week between the poorer of the two campsites at the foot of Tryfan and another somewhere coastal, west of Porthmadog. At the time the day-ticket was available from the Ogwen Falls cafe and covered Llyn Idwal, Llyn Ogwen, and the very little-fished Ffynnon Lloer which lies at about 600m altitude almost directly North of Tryfan on the other side of the road to Bethesda. The ticket also got you a mile or so on the (river) Afon Ogwen above the north end of the Llyn. A day ticket was £14 and it made economic sense to buy a week's ticket at £35 as I'd planned to be there for a little more than half the week. Call in advance re Sunday opening.

When I arrived at Llyn Ogwen it was raining heavily. Those who know Snowdonia will know that this doesn't just mean ordinarily English heavily. It means Welsh Mountain heavily. And the blokes in the cafe said that they'd had a **** season because heavily had been the adverb of the year. So it wasn't exactly promising from the outset. Then the winds picked up. I shall say very little more other than that after two days of attempting to fish Ffynnon Loer (successfully) and Llyn Idwal (unsuccessfully due, I'm inclined to believe, to the 'buffeting' white horses which were actually larger than the true Equus ferus you might normally expect to see trotting around a pasture, disabling every attempt at a 'cast') I thought about bailing. On the third morning I awoke to abandoned and flattened tents and a deserted campsite and made the decision to leg it. I'll never forget somebody's orange North Face tent dancing in the air as if it were a carrier bag in the wind at a Sainsbury's car park, its remaining tether a solitary peg in a deep-puddled ground. So I sought micro-climates new and bussed over to Porthmadog on an unsuccessful bass pursuit in slightly better weather! Although its unlikely that you'll suffer similar misfortune (yeah right, I've been down there too many times!) its simply got to be chanced. You're more than likely to be completely alone on Ffynnon Loe and it nestles in a very quiet ampitheatre, shaped wonderfully by the towering Pen yr Ole Wen, and if you're fishing isn't up to much you can always traverse the Carneddau, whatever the weather, as long as you know what you're doing! Ditto for Idwal and the Glyders, and of course Tryfan itself. Whatever the weather, my misery aside, it'll be a very memorable experience!

If that didn't whet your apetite to fish around Tryfan, and you can get to Llanberris easily, check out Llyn Dwythwch, a cracking little Llyn not too far from the hideous tourist path up to Snowdon. Day tickets are a tenner from the Post Office in Llanberris but it might not be open on a Sunday! I had a great short session here two Junes ago, fishing very successfully with the most unlikely, godawful Caddis I've ever tied. Llyn Padarn contains char but is boat-fishing only and I gather it attracts some nasty algal bloom.

Hope this helps. Have a great time and post up some piccies when you're back. I think I'm long overdue a trip to the area...

Tight lines
Ant

I agree, fish or not this is a great part of the world to be able to experience.
The Ogwen Falls Cafe is still the place for the tickets and I explored (only visually, mind you) the river but again couldn't see any sign of fish. I need to get back to the area and explore the bits I missed.
