[QUOTE=Tommy Ruffe;758167]Our 7½ acre reservoir is stuffed with rudd, so there's a hell of a lot of fry-bashing takes place and, over the past couple of months we've witnessed trout, mainly rainbows, some as small as 1½lbs, trying to stun and take rudd of 4 or 5 ounces whilst we're landing them, after taking them on dries.
I've seen a trout of around 3lbs, with a 4-5oz rudd across it's jaws, stop and turn it then swallow it. Is this sort of behaviour normal?
It seems pointless using size 6 lures, the maximum size we're permitted, when the trout are switched on to prey of that size.
Has anyone ever live or dead baited for trout, and what sort of size fish did you catch?

Hi Tommy,
I think at times we tend to lose sight of the fact that trout are a predatory species with a tendancy to cannabalism when the ocassion presents itself.
I'm not surprised to hear that the rainbows in your reservoir are reacting the way they are..With the quantity of rudd in the venue this is undoubtedly their prime food source..Rainbows are voracious eaters to the point of gluttony and will chase kill and devour most other fish species...and yes they will readily take a live or dead bait..as too do pike-perch-zander even chub will take a live minnow...Years ago with the advent of the 'rainbow fisheries' coming to being there was and still is a lot of controversy over the introduction of rainbows especially into waters that hold a head of brown trout for this very reason...Within a very short period of time rainbows became the dominant species ! and the brownies suffered because they could not compete for food..
Brown trout in the likes of Loch Awe grow at an alarming rate due to their cannibalism on other fish species..These Ferox trout are caught on trolled dead baits-sink and draw dead baits-and wobbled dead baits ..the record is I believe is in excess of 18 lbs ! No trout grows to these proportions by eating flies alone !
Your resident rainbows can be caught by fishing standard lures and flies ..Often trout both browns and rainbows can be seen chasing fry in the shallows..much like mackerel chasing whitebait..Size six fry imitations are ok for your circumstances and will catch..I suggest that perhaps you should try..polystickles-baby dolls-mylar minnows-floating roach and jersey herd patterns..if fishing is difficult by traditional methods.
Apologies for writing a novel !

hope this clears up the confusion.
Kindest regards,
JOHN
