Default free fishing

I have just been told that the last mile or so of the river otter in devon is free fishing and holds some nice wild brownies. Does anybody know if this is true or not. I will shortly be moving to devon and could do with a few free or cheaper venues to fish.

A handy site but I notice in the Scotland section such as it is it lists
Loch Lomond as free for coarse fish. Whilst true some years ago is not he case at present. A valid permit must be obtained prior to fishing.
Not so sure about the River Tay entry so I would be wary of some of the entries. Would be best to check first I would have thought.

It is indeed free and holds a good few trout and even sea trout (plus mullet, bass and flounders) but be warned that it is not wilderness fishing. A very busy footpath runs right along the length of it, in summer you will be sharing it with a lot of stick retrieving dogs! If you pick your times though (early or late) it is a nice enough spot.

Where in Devon will you be moving to? The east Devon rivers are mostly in the hands of syndicates or clubs with waiting lists but further afield there is plenty of cheap trout fishing.

If I was in Dawlish I would head north or west rather than east to the Otter, you could try:

Crediton FFC
Fishing in Devon - Crediton Fly Fishing Club

Upper Teign
Upper Teign Fishing Association

Or the Duchy waters on the Dart up on Dartmoor.
