Default Boat seat question

I have the chance of a TLD delux boat seat for £100 or do I buy the parts and build my own for around £70 (wise seat). Can anyone tell me what is more comfortable.

Thanks

Shanker

i find the best seats are the ones that sit high in the boat, it gives a better casting scope and far less tangles around the feet.

i recently tried both the tld version and the bob church and i found that the wider tld was alot cumfier all day and that the bob church wasn't wide enough to sit on it all day.
i also thought that the accross the gunnel type seat wasn't that safe(that my opinion and i'm not the most confident of people in a boat)especially if you leaned back a little.

i have been pondering making my own with the wise boat seat which i will be doing in the next few weeks.rotating bracket for £8.00 and some g clamps or small ratchet straps and your laughing and a cost of around £50-£60 if you find a cheap seat to begin with.i have also seen people mounting the tld version to a gunnel board which would be ideal.i did think of using a small step ladder but i will have to investigate further

Some people say that they prefer the extra few inches in height that an 'across the gunnels' seat such as the Bob Church seat offers.

Personally I have always found those type of seats to be uncomfortable after prolonged use and have been using a TLD strapped directly onto the plank seat built into the boat for many seasons now. I fish almost exclusively from boats, sometimes for up to 5 days in a row, and think a comfortable seat is the second most important item of tackle after a good set of waterproofs.

Although a few inches lower, the additional stability in a big wave and the ability to swivel are real bonuses.

Shanker, as far as your question is concerned I would have a go at the self-build option as I feel that the TLD, while a lot more comfortable than an across the gunnels seat, could do with slightly firmer padding and a bit more of it. Some of those boat seats for sale in chandlers do look very comfortable and I will probably go for that option myself when my TLD finally gives up the ghost.

Hope this helps.

Graham

I sourced a high back Wise seat for c £70 , a swivel C £10 both from a marine supplier via ebay ( Marine Scene )they are all pre drilledand easy to fit together and got a plate with ratchet straps from Rutland Fishing Lodge . Took about 10 mins to put together and I wouldn't be with out it now been going strong for 2 years , had to replace the swivel once. Slight downside is the the seat bit is slightly curved at the edges , which is fine when sitting normall but with your legs astride the thwart it take a whiole for the seat to mold to your legs . I think the Wise ones are much higher qualitry than the green ones I have seen in fishing catalohgues - they seem to be lacking in support ie not as well cushioned

It also depends on the type of boat - eg height and position of the seat boards. If you're fishing the same type of boat all the time, or your own boat, you can make something specific, but I have just made my own thwart board and I strap a very padded vinyl covered base to it, from an old office chair. I don't like a back - it gets in the way. Handy if you get back ache though. I often don't use the thwart board either - preferably not because that can also get in the way sometimes and just be something else to trip over - in which case I just strap the seat base to the boat's seat board, job done. The extra height from a thwart board is usually only marginal anyway. For a dead cheap solution YGA are selling covered foam boat seat cushions with velcro straps for around a tenner, also a version with a folding back for a bit more.
