Default Matt and Iain Horror Show – a clarification

I see there is continuing controversy in the thread following my post, The Matt and Iain Horror Show, and I would like to make it clear that at no time did I seek to belittle the achievements of Iain Barr, nor did I comment adversely about Matt Hayes making a living as a professional angler.
I don’t know either gentleman, although I am sure they are both splendid fellows. No, as I pointed out in the apology which I posted in my earlier thread, my point was simply that, regardless of their sporting eminence (Mr Barr) and celebrity (Mr Hayes), it was my view that they way they treated the fish they caught for the DVD in question was disgraceful.
I further pointed out that the DVD was endorsed by Trout Fisherman magazine, and, as it was clearly aimed at novice anglers, should not be encouraging what to my mind is bad practice.
(As I said in my earlier post, it is my view that trout should not be handled unless absolutely necessary, and then with only a minimum of contact and with hands which have been wetted to help to preserve their protective slime.)
If Trout Fisherman editor Russell Hill really does think that the way those fish were treated was in the best traditions of our sport, let him come on to this forum and say so. If not, then let him publicly dissociate himself and his magazine from such behaviour.

and just how "badly handled" do you think they were handled to get put in the fishery , netted from holding pools about 10 in each net full ,carried writhing and squashing against each other to a pick up/wagon with an oxygenated tank on the back ,then tipped out straight into the tank, then driven to the fishery , then netted again all squashed up writhing about like mad ,then tipped into the fishery .....................

think you had best give up fishing

Angus,
my subsequent posts were not aimed at your original, in fact, your comments re the handling on camera were very valid.
I did take offence at the subsequent character assinations however.
Good for you for trying to explain your thinking behind original post.
It was the reaction of others that got my hackles to rise.
regards
bert

Whilst proper regard and respect for our catch is laudable I sometimes think we get a bit too precious about this. Trout get far more roughly handled when being stocked than when being landed and returned and although all possible and reasonable care should be taken to handle and return the fish with no damage it is not always possible.

Catching fish involves sticking a hook in them, playing them for a period and then handling them to at least some extent to either unhook and return them or knock them on the head, none of which is the best thing for the fish and if you are that concerned about damaging them don't go fishing!!

Bruce, if your argument is that because the fish have already been abused, then it is all right to abuse them further, I can think of no reply which might persuade you differently.
On your second point, that you think I should give up fishing, would it be okay with you if I were to restrict myself to the pursuit of wild fish in our rivers and lakes, and in the seas around our coast?
If hauling stewpond jumbos out of hugely expensive day-ticket waters was the only form of fishing, I would happily take up your suggestion. In fact I would have packed in years ago.
