Default Where do stockie rainbows head off to on large Reservoirs????

For example.
The stocking wagon is located in the middle of the North Bank of a large water. Lots of fresh fish go in. Where do the rainbows head for in...
1) a North Wind
2) a South Wind
3) an East Wind
4) a West Wind

Any thoughts you competition Gurus?

the oposite direction to me usually!!! I don't think there are any rules.......the common opinion is that they follow the wind....i'm sure they do but not all the time.

I tend to think they run upwind.and they look for a depth of water that is similar to their stocking ponds.

Water temperature, wind direction, air temperature will have an impact on where they go

I also think they go with the flow of water. On the local resevoir here (Clywedog), as soon as Severn Trent let out a large ammount of water then you see fish turn up at more southerly locations in the general direction of the main dam. But as already stated this must be for the deeper water I guess.

You compy guys know that the "peloton" will follow you anyway straight from the boat jetty.

Trouble is, all these theories are usually based on a little pen drawing in 'Trout Fisherman' of a nice little lake with an island in the middle, a couple of points (peninsulas) a deep end, and a shallow end. I reality, no two waters are the same, and no two days are the same. Fish movement is based on many many variables, and better men than me will still struggle to get it right even 50% of the time.

Here's what your up against....

Air temp
Water temp
Water clarity
Water movement ('stillwaters' are never still)
Wind direction
Wind speed
Food source(s)
Features/Topography
Atmospherics (pressure)
Oxygen levels..................etc etc etc.

All these variables are changing and working together - hourly, daily and weekly. After 20 years experience on my local reservoir, I've managed to get a rough idea of seasonal movement... and reasons why, but just when you think you've got a clue.. bloody nightmare. If you come up with a fool-proof formula, let me know.
