Default How to put loop on fly line - what mag?

Hi all, either T+S or FF + FT ( think it was this one ) did an article about 3-4 months ago on how to put a nylon loop at the end of the line.

Recently I have been using a nail knot but find that when the leader breaks ( trees etc) or curls ( Varivas leader and tippet seem prone to this IMO ) , I cant put a brand new leader on, as one could with a loop to loop join.

Can anyone point me in the direction and i will get a back issue of that mag ?

Tks......

why nail not when there are so many more easier ways of attaching leader to line like a braided loop and linking a strong piece monofilament to your fly line with a needle knot both of which are a reliable way of attaching your leader to your line,

Spider, I think it was T&S, but here's a link which should let you cut to the chase (from our very own John Gray, who also wrote the article!)

Gray's Loop - Fly Line Leader Loop

Gray's Loop - Fly Line Leader Loop

Theo
Gray's loop is now my preferred method, especially for floating lines, have moved away from the braided loop, even the smallest braided loops drag a floater under eventually.

I'm going to give this one a try next time I'm re-rigging from scratch. I normally nail knot a piece of stiff mono to the fly tip and then tie a perfection loop in the end. It works really well and I haven't had to change the mono loops for many years now. However, this looks a bit more trim and is pretty close to a superglue method I use for threading leaders in. The problem I've had with doing that is once you've glued the leader in, you have to keep rebuilding that leader. The only line I've kept that with is my dry fly 3 wt line.

Thanks
Rick

Thanks for all that lads.

James, I wouldnt agree that braided loops are the way to go. Mine have snapped, got soggy and always have trouble fitting through to top ring.

With the nail knot, turnover was much superior, but its a very permanent way of attachment, wnhen sometimes all u wanna do it stick a clean new leader on.....

Nice one Theo, you've just saved me buying a back issue.

I've found that a short length of, say 15lb mono, needle knotted to the fly line, with a couple of coatings of "Hard As Nails" on the knot is the simplest and best way to. It moves easily through the tip rings, unlike braided loops.

thats what i ment by useing the needle knot, and id say its alot more reliable than the gray loop because if the loop snaps when your fishing youll have to retie the whole thing and possibly change your fly line? if you needle knot it with a length of strong mono you can retie the loop if it snaps and ive personally to this day not had a problem with braded loops?
