Default missed bites

need a bit of help. every evening I'm on the river i miss loads of bites. if i got 6 bites i probably would only hook into 1 fish. i fish dry fly upstream, nine foot leader with about two to three foot tippet. i think the fly i use are normally olives.

any ideas?

How do you mean missing ?? are you just not connecting... are you feeling the lip of the fish but not setting the hook properly... are they just too quick .. we need a little more info in order to suggest anything

As Icky says - we need more info to help - in the meantime the two most common reasons for me not hooking up are wrong fly and wrong size fly - the end result is the same. The fish swirl at it but don't actually take. The remedy is to change to a smaller fly or a more specific fly (if the fish are feeding on one species only).

Then of course there's dace.

i would normally see the fish coming up for the fly, would see the top of the water break. i try to set the hook then. but normally the hook will come out of the water minus fish. i think they are to quick. im not too sure. any time i do feel the lip of the fish they never get away

Based on that i would suggest you are lifting into the fish too early.

I think it's YOU that's too quick here, let the fish roll over before setting the hook.

Wait until you feel the fish and just lift the rod. If that fails, leave it a bit longer.

Thke old phrase was to let the fish take, doff your hat to him, say good morning Trout, and then set the hook.

will try leaving it a bit longer to set the hook. it so hard to that as i get a serious adreline rush we i see them.

is it possible that the trout are rising and not taking my fly in there mouth?
