Arrow Licence blitz - 19 caught out of 250 checked last weekend in North Wales

From the local newspaper:

NINETEEN anglers were caught fishing without a licence in a blitz by Environment Agency officers.

Daily Post North Wales - News - North Wales News - Nineteen anglers caught fishing without a licence in Environment Agency blitz

Over the weekend, officers carried out more than 250 checks on almost 30 different fishing spots. They will now be prosecuted and face fines of up to £2,500.

Earlier in May, 235 checks were carried out and 21 people were found fishing illegally.

Jason Westerberg Liptrot, team leader for Environment Agency Wales Environmental Crime Team said: “Funds from rod licence sales pay for fish to be bred to stock rivers; the development of fisheries to give people better and more places to fish; and to get more people, especially young people, interested in the sport.”

Mr Liptrot said officers regularly patrolled rivers and fishing spots throughout the year.

Last year, Agency officers conducted 2,800 rod licence checks and reported 103 people for fishing without a licence in north Wales alone.

Officers also caught 10 people netting illegally and two were caught poaching.

Mr Liptrot added: “All of the money we get from rod licence sales gets put straight back into the sport. It is spent on stocking, creating new and better facilities for anglers and giving people more opportunity to get involved.

“Anyone who doesn’t get a licence is not investing in their own sport, which spoils it for everyone else.

“Our officers are out there and will catch those who threaten the future of the sport and the fish they rely on.”

Any angler aged 12 years or over, fishing for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels in Wales must have an Environment Agency rod licence: these are available from Post Offices.

Good to hear! It's about time the EA got off their backsides and caught a few illegal anglers! That should be a benefit to us all who obey the LAW.

Yeah, but anyone who gets caught is investing quite heavily!

Do you need a licence to fish private stocked fisheries?

Yep.

Environment Agency - Buy your rod licence online
"...Any angler aged 12 years or over, fishing for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels in England (except the River Tweed), Wales or the Border Esk and its tributaries in Scotland must have an Environment Agency rod licence..."

Reidy,

the rod licence is needed for all rod-and-line fishing for freshwater fish in England and Wales, and that includes deliberately fishing for salmon and sea trout in estuaries and up to a certain distance offshore.

cheers

I have been checked 3 or 4 times in about 20 years. Down here in the sunny South, the EA guys seem to have a policy of short, sharp blitzes. The month of April, at all sizes of stillwater trout fisheries and (so I hear) commercial carp pools, is a popular time with them in this respect.
