hi, in a general way up eye hooks for dries( to help keep a little line by the hook off the water) and down eyed for wets nymphs and lures, the length of shank depends upon what fly you're tying but things are a changing. i wouldn't go for long shank, medium and short will do for most flies, light wire ones for dries and emergers and cdc to cut down weight, barb or barbless is individual and if adding a gold head then a good steady bend on the hook is needed as some hooks won't accept too smaller gold heads due to the sharpness of the bend, all in all keep looking/ listening and tying, all the best, bob

Hi Gary,
The link you provided has great prices, how do these compare to Kamason or TMC? Thanks

Hi Bobby,
Many of the fly patterns posted list the suggested hook with them and on YouTube Davie McPhail usually describes the hook he is using for the fly he demonstrates. The information above is also quite good. Most patterns can be tyied on 3 basic hooks (wet, dry and buzzer) and a couple of sizes.
Relax and take a deep breath and add to your supplies slowly. Good luck.
