Default Fishing within an hour of St Helens/Merseyside

Hi all,

I'm getting back into fly fishing, have bought myself quite a bit of gear and am looking for any pointers as to where to fish.

I mainly go to Cheshire fishing as it's where my dad taught me to fish about 20 years ago. I'm not fantastic, but not a beginner

I think I like it here as I got my PB here, a 9lb6 rainbow and it got me 2nd prize in a competition, a fleece jacket worth £200

This was going back about 9 years and the only other place I have tried is a little place in north wales off the main A road, with 2 small lakes and a nice chap working from a caravan (not much to go on I know).

I'm looking for something similar to Cheshire if poss. Everyone not going to look at me in disgust if I offer one of my flies as a sacrifice to the tree gods, decent fishing, the chance of a biggun and not too far travelling from st helens and catch and keep.

Or am I better the devil I know..........

All suggestions welcome

That looks great, thanks.

Any personal recommendations from anyone taking into account my first post?

Hi,

You can try Barnsforld near Preston is pretty good, nice surroundings, but can be a little exposed if it's windy. There is some nice fish in there full fins and decent sizes.

You could also try Curleys near Bolton, not too many larger fish, but plenty at around 1-2 lbs mark. Curleys also has a nice restaurant overlooking the fishery where you can check out where to fish or go for a bite to eat if you get hungry.

Both are well inside 1 hour of St.Helens.

Good luck.

Thanks traveller and fishing junkie.

Barnsford and curleys both look good and are only within an hour so I'll prob give them a try.

Graiglwyd looks FANTASTIC but its a 3 hour round trip so would have to leave that for now

Hiya Johnnystone,

I live in Newton Le Willows, but I must admit I tend not to fish the local fisheries - no reflection on their quality, I just prefer to go to the bigger ressies to boat fish or have a long open bank to wander along.

For up to an hours travel north there's Stocks, Croston, Cleveley Mere, Conder Valley, Bankhouse and Barnsfold and Curleys as already mentioned.

On the doorstep is Woodhouse fishery on the common between Newton and St Helens, although I've heard mixed reports about it.

South down the M6 Westlowmere is probably the closest, there's also Blithfield, Dearnford and Seighford. A little further again are Carsington and Foremark along the A50.

East of Manchester there's Arnfield and Errwood reservoirs - might be pushing the hour travel limit though.

Other than Meadow Fishery at Chester, and Chirk fishery I'm not too sure about the north Wales area.

there's a searchable site at this link:
Environment Agency - Where to go fishing

but these forums are a great source of info too.

All the best
Brian

Thanks Bazza.

Yep Im 5 mins from the one in the common, I live on the new bold estate, just by the burtonwood brewery. TBH I've heard nothing but bad reports about it, and not sure if its even still going so will definitely give it a miss. Will have a look at the others though, never thought about fly fishing from a boat, may even try that too
