Default River and Stream - Fast Water -What Fly?

Hi All,

I fish rivers and streams!! I also fish dry fly for at least 90% of my fly fishing!

What are your three best dry flies for fishing riffles and fast running water??

I would put my three as follows :

1, A well hackle'd Klink that floats well with a hi viz post! - Size 14,

2, A Para Adams, again well hackle'd with a hi viz post! - Size 14

3, A CDC & Elk, with a decent bit of Elk hair tied in to float well! - Size 14

For slower water or deep slow runs - I may use some smaller flies of size 16, or 18, a "Black Shuttlecock buzzer " being one of my favourites along with a baby sun fly; and a few others as the para Adams.

I don't do very well with CDC Para Dunn's!! But, the Para Dunn's that are Hackle'd with a hi viz post, work brilliantly for me!

What about you guy's? What's your favourite flies for fast moving water?

Thanks

M

It has to float like a cork so, if not a bushy klink, then a balloon caddis.

Talking of klinks, Mostyn - did you manage to fool anything with that effort of mine?

When you say a klink Mostyn, do you mean a KLINKhammer, or a parachute type fly ?
I use a lot of para type flies with a pink wingpost for visibilty, either aerowing or foam, but tied on 14's and 16's Kamasan B400's. The best hooks, IMO. You can keep all these Varivas and fine wire jobbies, more trouble than they are worth, again IMO.
My other favourite fly at the moment is a deerhair comparadun, which for me works a treat, and floats all day with little trouble.
I am trying to perfect the art of tying them as we speak, and they get better each time.
My other go to fly is an elkhair and cdc, it tends to fish better in the late evening,as the sedges come on the water, and even if I can't see it after dark, I am finding a cast accross the river, and a gentle tweak back is all that's needed.
I like CDC flies in as much as they are easy to tie, and look well on the water, but after one fish, and even after a good drying out and a frogs fannying, they are never the same for me.
I would happily go out for the evening with half a dozen comparaduns in my hat, and feel confident in catching, so the question has to be, why do I carry three boxes of flies in my waistcoat all the time.
S.

Rarley lately have i been fishing a single dry and mainly fishing nymphs with the french leader set up in the fast water but a klinkhammer with a bead head PTN or a small olive nymph or both below the klink has been working well for me this season. My klinkhammers are tied to be more like floats rather than delicate dry flies though. Two big ginger cock hackles and a big tall fluo green antron wing post to help keep it up and boy does it float. I have ballon caddis's and some elk's in my box aswell but dont usually carry the adams although i should because it shares the same name as me Good luck mate !

Last few weeks:

With low water even the riffles are getting smoother and slower, so in order of preference:

- Para BWO 16 - 18

- John Storey 14

- Greenwells Glory Doubled up hackle 14
