Question Fishing near Killearn

Managed to negotiate an evenings fishing whilst we are wandering round Scotland on the family hols. We will be staying in Killearn that night, fancy North Third, but open to suggestions within an hours drive. Be interested to hear what the locals think?

Is the Killern Fishery still open, I remember in a fit of madness some years ago visiting a put & take fishery near The Meetings Pool on the Endrick.
Maybe the poster could have a day on that one. There is one at Carbeth but I am told it is no more than an excavated pond.

Billy2,

I live in Killearn. If the water is right the Endrick could be the best bet. Salmon and sea trout from July onwards. about a mile away at the Potts of Gartness you can buy a permit for a stretch of the Endrick for a few pounds from a guy called Patterson who lives just beside the Potts of Gartness - about 50 yards away. Also Bilslands at Croftamie sell permits.

Nearest fishery is Carbeth. Never fished it, never would. Killearn House fishery is closed.

Carron Valley reservoir is about 25 minutes away and they sell tickets for boat and bank. It has a big stock of wild brownies and is stocked with rainbows.

The Trossachs lochs are within 20-30 minutes drive. Drunkie and Reodhite near Aberfoyle, tickets at the David Marshall Lodge. Loch Ard permits from the store at Kinlochard.

Thanks for the pointers.
The last time I saw the Killearn Fishery was on Channel 4's Grand Designs. The Endrick sounds tempting, but will be taking my son with me and an evening in a boat would probably suit us better.
I had considered Carron Valley, but it looks a bit big, unless there are recognised easy to find drifts?

Thanks again
Billy

Billy,

The boats at Carron Valley are kept at the dam end of the reservoir. Conveniently, the dam end is one of the hot spots where most boats gravitate towards. Most fish are taken close to the shore elsewhere and you need only explore as much of the resrvoir as you want. The scenery is fantastic and the Ospreys will be there to keep you company.

It would be a good choice if you only have one nights fishing.

therealijn.

Hi Billy,

Fraser and Eeky who are the owners will keep you right regarding the fishing. An evening on Carron shouldn't be missed especially at this time of the year.

Good luck.

Again thanks for the helpful posts. Has nobody got anything good to say about North Third?
Fished it a couple of times and really enjoyed it!
