Hi Folks,

I am going to be in Wales for a few days commencing 22nd August this year. My daughter is cycling in Newport and I will have to be based within reasonable vehicle travelling distance from there. I might have a few evenings and possibly a full day to fish and was hoping to wet a line in either river or Loch / reservoir.
I do not know the area at all and would really appreciate any advice as to where may be available and productive at that time ? I would also be very interested in any areas that may have good quality accomodation nearby or with fishing within maybe 10 to 15 miles from Newport?

all suggestions welcome.

I'd have thought that the Wye & Usk Foundation beats on the Usk, Monnow or Honddhu would be within easy travelling distance.

You're spoilt for choice, there's Llandegfedd Reservoir just up the road from Newport and the Afon Ebbw runs into the west of Newport offering some of the best brown trout fishing in South Wales.
There's day ticket water on the Usk between Caerleon and Abergavenny going north of Newport which is top class and easy on the eye.

If I were staying in Newport I'd go for one of the hotels in the Usk valley not too far from town. The Newbridge Inn might be a good bet -

Newport itself isn't pretty although it's improving but I remember in the 1970s there was a big fuss because a Japanese film company had chosen it a a location for a post holocaust film!

If you're on the Usk you probably won't want to budge but there's the Afon Llwyd for throw - away price fishing next valley west.

The Rhymney is the next river going west from Newport with Ynys Y Fro reservoir along the way.

Next stop, about 15 miles the Taff, my home river, minty fishing for big brown trout after 8 (pm).

Day ticket prices are extremely reasonable for river and reservoir, and easily accessible give us a shout nearer the time for the info.

Thanks for taking the time to reply folks. Some excellent info and a wealth of good fishing to choose from by the look of it. The Newbridge looks very inviting and is in a beautiful location too. The Newport club waters also look worthy of a visit. Certainly given me something to think about. I have been to Newport a number of times but have always been restricted to the velodrome area so didn't get to see much else. I must say though that I found the people very friendly and the rural areas surrounding Newport looked stunning. I am determined to get a closer look this time around so thanks again. Much appreciated.
