Not often do we get a really 'off the charts' crash and bang (want one of those go to Idaho through Winnipeg; 4th of July when they get going).
But we have have a 'fishing hole' here on the middle Rogue called 'Explosion.' We were fishing with 14-15 foot 2-handers when I took a real look at the cloud formation quickly approaching us from the west. Having lived for many years in Central Canada I had a damned good idea what was/maybe coming.
Fishing buddy and I were about 2 miles down stream from the boat launch in his (thankfully damned fast) 16' 'jet slead' and 'beat feet' back to the boat ramp. Got back, tied off boat and all hell broke loose around/over us (but we were back in his truck).
After the storm past we jumped back in his boat and off we went. Anyway, one of the bolts hit a multi-hundred year old Oak tree and literally blasted the thing into cord wood. Hence the name the 'Explosion Hole.' Named after the tree. Hell of it is, the damned thing survived and is still 'live and well.' Apparently these things will take a hell of a hit and walk away.
A few other 'experiences,' the most interesting (reasonably current) was when Joan and I had our Vineyards here in So. Oregon. Another of these things passed over (plants were only about a year old at that time) and it was another 4th of July show. Only 'problem' is that I had thousands of metal poles on which were hanging multi-thousands of feet of #10 galvanized catch/cordon arm wire.
Talk about a lightning rod!! Actually darned little damage to the plants, but one bolt hit a few feet from my electronic irrigation control box. Fried the damned thing; warranties (even if the 'why it failed' was a tad less than truthful) work.
