Default Fly selection

Hello all.
Very new to fly fishing and only my third post on this forum. Over the last month or so i have been taking casting lessons and working on my casting. I still havn't fished with a fly yet Have baught rod, reel etc both grays .I now need to start getting a small selection of flies together. My question is what flies are a good starting point. I will for the time being be fishing still water venues .I know a lot of people will say match the hatch and i understand that and have looked into what flies work well on the venue i intend to fish but would like to know if there are any must have flies in the box. A sort of good alrounder selection.
Brian.

People will give you all kinds of weird & wonderful suggestions, based more on personal bias than generally accepted "killer" patterns.

Here's what I'd say is a good, minimalist selection of proven fish-takers:

Dries:
Daddy long-legs
Walker's Sedge
Griffith's gnat
Shipman's buzzer (semi-dry)
Hopper
Nymphs:
GRHE
Diawl Bach
Black buzzer
Goldhead marabou damsel (more of a drab lure)
Montana nymph (again, more a lure)
PTN
Lures:
Cat's whisker
Woolly bu**er
Marabou Viva

Agree whole heartedly with Steve's list but would add a cruncher as it is an old favourite. I am sure everyone will add one more must have until you need a van to carry your fly box around.
