Default Flies for Currane and Leane

Hi,

We've taken a holiday house in Kilarney 2nd week of July. I'm planning to down to Waterville for a couple of days on Currane as I haven't fished it before.
I'm then hoping to sneek away for a few evenings on Leane. -Family holiday so won't get fishing whole week.

Recommendations for flies on these waters at this time of year would be very welcome. I've read Bibios for Currane- anything else been heard to do the biz recently?
I've been told sedges are good for Leane in evening- I've tied a few from last months T&S but any specific recommended patterns would be great.

One of the best things about fishing trips is the anticipation; can't wait!

Cheers, Sooty Olive

Some bibios would do fine, together with golden olive bumbles, goats toe, fur bodied pennells and some red ar5ed green peters. They do seem to like the green peters small on Currane.
Hope you enjoy

I was on Currane a week or so ago. Sorry to say it wasn't fishing well - there were fish about but not taking. They've had no rain over there and the Lough is low, which they say affects the fishing. We had a few small sea trout and a few browns and a load of Rudd(!)

All the flies mentioned so far are spot on, I also had fish on Delphi shrimp, Kate McLaren and Jungle bunny. We were recommended size 12s as the lough is so low.

If the weather is bright and hot don't bother fishing the afternoon but come out and fish after tea until dark. Early mornings are good when the weather is like that but needs a wind really...

Hopefully they'll get some rain over there before you go...

Thanks for the suggested patterns. I'll get tying a few of those I don't have.
Hopefully they'll get some rain. We fishermen are never happy- Fished Corrib in April and was too high and cold. Stands to reason that my excuse in July will be too low and warm!

Cheers,

Sooty Olive

the red **** green peter is deadly on currane as is the jungle bunny
also try the watson fancy, claret bumble, watsons bumble and connemara black
also if there is a breeze try a muddler they can be good
make sure you get a gillie if you havent been out on the lake before its very dangerous with hidden rocks
i dont fish lough leane much but the sooty olive did work for me there before

Thanks, I've been searching for the tying of a jungle bunny. Some look like bibios with JC cheeks. Others have the JC tyed in long as a wing and a red butt. Which is the local favourate for Currane?

To be honest the rocks were pretty much all visible the Lough was that low!

This is the type I used. Maybe some locals can give a definitive answer?

The type with the JC tied as the wing looks a bit like a Delphi Shrimp so you could hedge your bets and use one of them on the point and the bibio-type bunny on the top.

Great- I tied some of those and Watson's bumbles tonight. Included some 14s given the low conditions.
