Default Stillwater bubbles with fish around 9pm??

Hi there,

Looking for some help fish a local fishery In south Lanarkshire once a week and from around half 5 when I start and 9pm nothing much happens sometimes pick up a few. Then at 9pm the place comes alive but I still only manage to pick up a few on small cdc's, sedges, and klinkhammers.

Was just looking for some advice to what the may be feeding on and the best approach and tactics would be to landing a few more of the feeding fish?

Any Info much appreciated

Nothing unusual here.
It is "The Evening Rise"
Sun dips, flies begin to appear in numbers. Trout will home in on what is there to the exception of what you or I have on our cast at the time on many occasions.
Once you can identify what they are feeding on you will have half a chance.
I did a wee article a while back on "Rise Forms" which some found helpful which was a wee guide to what type of flies Trout might be taking by the way they "rose" to a fly. I will see if I can find it & post it here. That coupled with a wee bit of entomology should help. Comes with experience & that can not be "all" learned from books I am afraid. So next time it happens take a few minutes & step back & watch what they are doing. See if theyare sipping in flies, splashing at flies maybe you might just see their fin or back break surface. All indicates a different food form.

Try a small muddler or montana last thing ahead of moving fish. Seems to work for me.
If they are on sedges try a G&H sedge or wickhams.
I don't have much success with dries at thsi time of night but a shipmans can be effective.

If there are lots of tiny white flies about ,then they could be taking Caenis.(the anglers curse).

That's the Caenis. fish lock onto them.not easy to imitate.I usually pull a minkie past them.

Highlander, I'd be really interested to see that article too. Till coming here, I just thought a rise was a rise. I know better now but still don't know how to "interpret" what I see on the water.

Cheers,

Neil
