Default Does anyone use Fly Snap Hooks?

Hi

I was in Sportfish the other day and saw some Fly Snap Hooks by Mustad?

I am normally a traditionalist when it comes to fly fishing but the Snap Hooks make sense for many reasons.

Nominal degradation of a leader
Fast/Immediate changover of flies

What's the negative side?

If anyone uses this method or has used it please let me know.

I have bought a pack just in case and will try it later this week.

Cheers....Rob

Rob ,
these have been around since I was a lad (not a short time ) , they never have taken off.
fiddly to use and to my mind dont enhance presentation of the fly.
Cheap enough for a try though ,what suits me may not be right for you !

Rob, i had my daughter use these until she learnt to tie the correct knots etc ,and she caught using them, i decided to try them my self to see if there was anything different to my catch rate ,to be honest there was no difference and as far as im concerned for someone who maybe has arthritis or something they are a damn good thing ,we only used the smallest size and seems to have no effect on the fly's movement ,infact i would say it enhances it as it has room to move in the loop connecting it to the eye for the price try them

I just saw these in the GAC cat and was wondering the same, sounds like a great Idea, I hate the idea of ending up with much shortened leader after a few fly changes so these make sense from this POW.

You'll have to tell us how you get on with them

Default Snap Hooks

Have used them on and off for years. Never had a problem with one straightening/failing etc. Have landed salmon on them up to the low teens.

Another example of over-engineering a totally non existant problem

Creates poor presentation if using imitative flies...fare enough if big pulling patterns.

Every connection is a weak point...the reason I fish straight leader lengths rather than tapering sections. I would rather trust a well tied knot that a cheap piece of dodgy Mustad engineering (made out of the same material as their cheap and nasty bronzed hooks).

Only a small chance of going wrong but if it brings no benefit why risk it?

Had these in my bag for a few years only ever used em on hard days when stripping through my box of bigger lures.

Wouldn't recommend em for any smaller imitative patterns just the big bright fellows!
