Default Its time to teach the boy.

My son has been coming fishing and shooting since he could walk, hes now six and hes one of those really able kids, the one that just get on with it and can do stuff.
So i have high hopes for him.He really wants me to get him his own rod now so im after something suitable for him but also i will be taking it out too maybe for dry fly fishing on small stillwaters and rivers.
I would like to know waht length rod and line weight please?i thought 6ft number 3 ?or is that too light for say a 3lb trout? or should i be going for 7ft number 4?im not looking for brand recomendations just the rod size and line weight,
He is only little.

Hi StormClan;

My daughter has just turned eleven but has been fishing with me since the age of three. At the age of seven she insisted on no longer fishing with me but having her own rod so I let her use my six foot 3 weight which I've overlined with a 4 weight line so that it loads faster. She's done extremely well with this rod and is still using it to this day which has led to multiple arguments when we are fishing small streams and I'm forced to use my nine foot 5 weight. A six foot 3 weight will handle trout up to seven or eight pounds (personal experience!) so a three pounder is no problem. You might want to invest in a couple of furled leaders as well since this will cut down on the wind knots and will make his casting and lift off easier. The one thing to be absolutely certain of is that he's wearing a pair of glasses to protect his eyes and that you explain to him why he has to keep them on.

Just don't expect to fish much the first few times you go out with him and be patient as he isn't going to want to hear anything about how to cast at first but will know everything from having watched you!

Enjoy and take lots of pictures!

Terry

Thanks for that very helpful,i have a spare pair of glasses somewhere he can have them.
the greys grxi 6ft number 3 weight is looking like a contender as you get a free reel with it at gary evans.i think i might treat him.
what should i start him on? floating line or intermediate?

I started off at 5 years old with a 7.5ft No 5 fibre glass rod and had first river trout that day. Was fine weight wise. It would help with casting if overlined as most will be limited to less than 10 yards or 5 times the rod length. Using a heavier line be beneficial as a slightly heavier line provides more feedback to the user and slows the rod action down which is helpful to learners.

Rather than using going for the Greys, maybe better setting up from with a Shakespheare Odessey (either the 7 or 8 ft 4/5 overlined with 6 line), Okuma Airstream or Dynadisc reel and pirate line or similar so that he still has his own stuff (and you wont be too heart broken when he breaks the rod accidently, which will happen at some point). Could get two rods and reels for the price of the Greys which would be just as good and last him until he was in teens.

I'ld go with a floating line but on the other hand that's all I ever use! Some good points from others but I'ld stick with a six footer just due to the leverage action of a long rod on a small body. If you figure that your boy is three feet tall then using a six foot rod is the equivalent of a six foot man using a twelve foot rod.

Garethl from the forum is selling a 6'6" 3 weight Vision 3 zone for 70 sterling which is a great bargin: http://www.flyforums.co.uk/member-cl...rods-sale.html
so you might want to drop him a pm as that's suppose to be a great rod but I've also heard good things about the Greys. For a line I'ld pm the Pirate as he will give you honest and more importantly good advice on what to get even if it's not one of his lines. Incidentally I use one of his floating lines and love it.

Take care

Terry
