Default Quads?

Are there any cane makers in the UK producing hand planed quads?
I believe that Chapman's can do them, but I was wondering about small makers using their own forms.

Cheers

Hi Steve

I don’t think there is mate.
My good friend Paul Blakley made a poor mans quad a few years ago. I must admit we were not that impressed with it.

I think there is only Chapman’s in the Uk who make them.
Unless there is someone hidden away ?

Thanks Gary,

Yep I was hoping this would flush out any secret makers lurking!

From what I've read the quads are supposed to be a firmer and more accurate rod than the hex, and sometimes a longer caster but still cast short. What was wrong with the one you tried?

Cheers

Hi Steve
In my opinion the differences were very minimal in comparison.
On a like for like, better results would be achieved in my view by proven systematic adjustments of a Hex taper.

On top of that Quads are harder to build and they require a different set of forms.
Ferrules are a real problem on a quad.
Three options, fit a standard set and remove way too much bamboo.
Fit an over size set and live with the extra bulk.
Or go for expensive custom made jobs which fit the size and shape of the finished rod section.
I could go on........
Better not some people like them

I take it quad is four sections of bamboo?

I have heard that five sections are very good - I read a paper on it once and it suggested that the lack of symmetry meant a much truer action.

Yep, I've read that because of the wider flats that the casting is stronger and truer.
I seem to remember reading of penta's that they were stronger, but to my mind, they would have the unusual characteristic of having a different action on the forward cast than the backcast - much like the "D-Flex" rods which David Norwich help develop.

Pentagonal (5 strip) Construction

Another interesting exposition..

There are also quite a few rodmakers in North America doing quads and pentagons. This lot seem to do everything..
