Default Landfill sites threaten Agivey River..............

Hi, I am very new to this forum, but as a member of the Agivey Anglers Association, I feel compelled to start this, and listen to opinions from fellow anglers.

The Agivey River(as some of you know, and fished) is situated in the north west of N. Ireland and flows into the River Bann. At present there is a Landfill site in operation close to a tributary of the river, which we have prosecuted the previous owner on two occasions for pollution, and he also served some time for his troubles. The site, now under a new owner, continues to grow and expand.

Not happy with this, two other businesses wish to start up landfill sites along other tributaries of the river, one is at an early planning stage, the other at an advanced stage. If approved, there will be 3 major landfill sites all within 4 milles (as the crow flies) of each other, with any accidental leakage all flowing downstream into the river.

There is a residents action group which we are involved with, and we are fighting hard with planning/government to reject any planning approval.

Any thoughts.................

Good man, if you make a petition I could see 500+ signatures easy.

Who exactly could I email to show my concern over landfill sites on the agivey river?

I have grown up, watching each of the rivers I fished as a child becoming more and more void of fish. A pollution spill wiped out the ballymoney river last year and worst of all, I reported the sewage leak 3 times and every time they told me there was nothing wrong.

Next thing I know there are brownies dead right down to the mouth of the burn, so many proper 2 pound trout and some going into 4 - 5 pound, pure wild browns wiped out. I can not tell you how angry it makes me.

No truer words spoken..................

The angling club have being lobbying Stormont, local mla's, tourism, etc. but no-one seems to care, and we have the river internationals next year(2011) which will bring anglers from Scotland, England, Wales and all of Ireland to the area.

Thanks for the concern,

We have been getting signatures on the planning objections and addendums, the local residents group have been doing some brilliant work, i also have Fish Legal on the job, their doing some good work also.
